The Maldives flag: red, green and a white crescent

The flag of the Maldives is a red field with a large green rectangle in the centre holding a white crescent, its open side facing the fly. For centuries Maldivian ships and the sultans flew a plain red flag, the colour of the blood the islanders were ready to shed for their nation; a black-and-white striped band, the dhandimathi, ran along the hoist in the early twentieth century. The green panel was added in the 1930s and the crescent, the symbol of the Islamic faith of the islands, followed, and the present design, without the striped band, was adopted on 26 July 1965 when the Maldives became fully independent of British protection. Green is read as the palms of the coral atolls and as peace and prosperity. Our Maldives flag uses a deep scarlet and a bright mid green so the white crescent stands out sharply on every size.

Independence Day, the Red Snappers and Maldives holidays

Independence Day on 26 July is the national day, with parades and a flag ceremony in the Republic Square in Malé and celebrations on every inhabited island; Victory Day on 3 November and Republic Day on 11 November follow, and Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are the great family festivals. Football is the national game, and the Red Snappers won the South Asian Football Federation Championship in 2008 and 2018. For most people in Britain the flag means the islands themselves: honeymooners, divers and travel agents ask for it for wedding tables, dive-club nights and window displays, and there is a small Maldivian community in London and among students at British universities. The Maldives is also a Commonwealth member again since rejoining in 2020, so the flag joins Commonwealth Day line-ups, and it is a favourite on school climate-change displays because the islands are among the lowest-lying in the world.

Sizes, grades and fittings

A 5ft x 3ft is the size for a pole, a dive shop or a function room; a 3ft x 2ft for a travel agent window or a stall; an 8ft x 5ft for a big mast or an event stage; and a 20x12in for a car or a hand pole. Flagtex is our printed woven polyester for indoor displays and a few weeks outdoors, DuraFlag the knitted heavyweight with a double-stitched hem for a pole that stays rigged. Each has a sewn header with two brass eyelets, and DuraFlag also comes with clips or with rope and toggle.

Maldives bunting

Maldives bunting is a string of rectangular red pennants with the green panel and crescent, in 3m and 9m lengths. Use 3m round a wedding cake table, a shop window or a classroom display on island nations; 9m runs along a terrace, a dive club bar or a marquee. The pennants are printed on both sides in polyester and survive a damp afternoon.

Hand flags and table flags

Maldives hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for Independence Day, football and Commonwealth events. The Maldives table flag is a 6x4in desk flag with a base for a travel agent or a dive centre, and the large wooden table flag at 18x12in suits a hotel reception or a top table. Sri Lanka, India, the Seychelles and Mauritius flags are under world flags.
