The Malaysian flag: the Jalur Gemilang

Malaysia’s flag, the Jalur Gemilang or Stripes of Glory, has fourteen alternating red and white horizontal stripes and a dark blue canton bearing a yellow crescent and a fourteen-pointed star, the Bintang Persekutuan or Federal Star. The fourteen stripes and the fourteen points stand for the thirteen states and the federal territories; the crescent is for Islam, the yellow is the royal colour of the Malay rulers, and the blue canton represents the unity of the people. The design was chosen in a 1949 competition, won by Mohamed Hamzah, an architect from Johor, and first flown with eleven stripes in 1950; the fourteen-stripe version dates from the formation of Malaysia in 1963 and the Jalur Gemilang name from 1997. Our Malaysia flag is printed with the full fourteen stripes and the fourteen-point star clearly defined on the canton.

Merdeka, Malaysia Day and the badminton hall

Hari Merdeka on 31 August marks independence in 1957 and Malaysia Day on 16 September the federation of 1963, and between them the flag is on every building and car for a fortnight. In the UK the Malaysian student population is one of the largest of any country, so Merdeka nights, Malaysian Night cultural shows and the embassy’s own celebrations in London bring out flags in Manchester, Nottingham, Sheffield, Cardiff and Edinburgh every autumn. Badminton is the sport, with Malaysian support loud at the All England in Birmingham each March, and the flag also appears for the Harimau Malaya football team, for sepak takraw demonstrations, for Malaysia Fest in Trafalgar Square and at Malaysian restaurants and food stalls year round.

Which size

Choose 5ft x 3ft for a flagpole, a stage or a bar wall; 3ft x 2ft for a shop window, a desk wall or a short pole; 8ft x 5ft for a large fixed pole or a stage backdrop; and 20x12in for a car window or a hand pole. Flagtex is the lighter printed polyester for indoor use and short outdoor spells, DuraFlag the knitted heavyweight with double-stitched edges built to stay on a pole through a season. Sewn headers and brass eyelets are standard, with clips and rope-and-toggle fittings on the DuraFlag.

Malaysia bunting

Malaysia bunting has rectangular pennants with the full Jalur Gemilang design sewn to a tape, in 3m and 9m lengths. A 3m run dresses a stall front or a doorway for Merdeka; a 9m run goes along a hall or round a marquee for a Malaysian Night. The pennants are polyester with the design printed on both faces and can be used outdoors.

Hand flags and table flags

Malaysia hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for badminton crowds, parades and the Merdeka countdown. The Malaysia table flag is 6x4in on a base for an office or a restaurant table, and the large wooden table flag at 18x12in suits a reception or a high commission desk. Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei and Thailand flags are all under world flags.

Malaysian flag FAQs

Why does the Malaysian flag have fourteen stripes?

For the thirteen states of Malaysia plus the federal government; the star in the canton has fourteen points for the same reason.

What does Jalur Gemilang mean?

Stripes of Glory in Malay. The name was given to the flag in 1997 by Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on the 40th anniversary of independence.

Is the Malaysian flag similar to the American flag?

Both have red and white stripes and a blue canton, but Malaysia’s canton holds a crescent and a single fourteen-point star rather than fifty stars.

When is Merdeka Day?

31 August, marking independence in 1957. Malaysia Day on 16 September commemorates the 1963 federation with Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore.

Which size Malaysia flag for a Malaysian Night?

8ft x 5ft across the back of the stage, 5ft x 3ft on the walls or outside on a pole, and 9x6in hand flags on the tables for the finale.

Which grade lasts longer outside?

DuraFlag, the knitted heavyweight polyester with reinforced hems, which is built to be left on a pole; Flagtex is better kept for indoor displays and short events.
