The Luxembourg flag: red, white and light blue
The flag of Luxembourg is a horizontal tricolour of red, white and light blue, in use since 1845 and formally adopted by law on 23 June 1972. The colours come from the arms of the Grand Duchy, a red lion on a field of white and blue stripes that goes back to the Counts of Luxembourg in the thirteenth century. It is often confused with the Dutch flag, from which it differs in two ways: the blue is a lighter sky blue rather than the Netherlands’ cobalt, and the proportions are 3:5 or 1:2 rather than 2:3. The second Luxembourg flag is the Roude Léiw, the red lion: ten horizontal stripes of white and blue with a crowned red lion rampant, the civil ensign used on ships registered in Luxembourg and on the Moselle since 1972 and widely waved as a sporting flag. We stock it as the Luxembourg Civil Ensign in 20x12in and 5ft x 3ft. Our Luxembourg flag uses the lighter blue of the Luxembourg specification so it is not mistaken for the Dutch tricolour.
National Day, the Red Lions and the cycling
National Day on 23 June is the official birthday of the Grand Duke, celebrated with the torchlight procession and fireworks in Luxembourg City on the evening of the 22nd, the Te Deum and the military parade on the day, and the tricolour and the Roude Léiw on every house. The Octave pilgrimage in May and the Schueberfouer fair at the end of August are the other seasons when the flags are out. In sport it is the Roud Léiwen, the national football side who have taken points off the big nations in recent qualifiers at the Stade de Luxembourg, the cycling of Charly Gaul, Andy and Fränk Schleck and Bob Jungels, and the tennis of Gilles Muller. Luxembourg’s community in Britain is small but active, with the embassy in Wilton Crescent hosting National Day receptions, the Luxembourg Society of London and students at UK universities, and the flag is seen at Eurovision parties and European football nights.
Sizes, grades and fittings
The national flag comes in 20x12in for a car or a hand pole, 3ft x 2ft for a window or a desk wall, 5ft x 3ft for a flagpole, a club or an office, and 8ft x 5ft for a large fixed mast or a backdrop, in both Flagtex, the printed woven polyester for indoor and short-term outdoor use, and DuraFlag, the knitted heavyweight with double-stitched edges for a season outside. The civil ensign is stocked as a 5ft x 3ft Flagtex and as a 20x12in or 5ft x 3ft DuraFlag. Every flag has a sewn header with brass eyelets, and the DuraFlag can be ordered with clips or rope and toggle.
Luxembourg bunting
Luxembourg bunting is a run of rectangular tricolour pennants on a tape in 3m and 9m lengths. A 3m run suits a doorway, a buffet table or a classroom; a 9m run dresses a hall, a marquee or a bar for 23 June or a match night. The polyester pennants are printed on both sides and can stay out in rain.
Hand flags and table flags
Luxembourg hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for football, cycling roadsides and National Day events. The Luxembourg table flag is a 6x4in flag on a base for an office, a conference table or a dinner setting, the wooden table flag is a 9x6in on a stick and base, and the large wooden table flag at 18x12in suits an embassy desk or a reception. Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Germany and the European Union flags are under world flags.
