The Lithuanian flag: yellow, green and red

Lithuania’s flag is a horizontal tricolour of yellow, green and red in equal bands, with a 3:5 ratio. Yellow is for the sun and prosperity, green for the forests and countryside, and red for the blood shed for the country, a reading that was fixed when the flag was chosen by the Council of Lithuania in April 1918, a few weeks after the declaration of independence. It was suppressed under Soviet rule and raised again on the Gediminas Tower in Vilnius in October 1988, before being restored as the state flag in 1989, ahead of the restoration of independence on 11 March 1990. Lithuania also has a historical state flag, red with the Vytis, the white mounted knight, which is flown on certain days alongside the tricolour. Our Lithuania flag is the tricolour, with the three bands of equal depth in the standard proportions.

16 February, 11 March and basketball

Lithuania has two independence days: 16 February, the 1918 declaration, and 11 March, the 1990 restoration, and both are marked with flags on every building, with 13 January and the Flag Day on 1 January added to the list. The Lithuanian community in the UK is large, with concentrations in Peterborough, Boston, Wisbech, London, Northampton and Glasgow, and Lithuanian schools, churches and community centres fly the flag for those dates, for Joninės at midsummer and for the Lithuanian Song Festival years. Basketball is the national sport and Lithuanian fans follow the national team to the EuroBasket tournaments in a sea of yellow, green and red; the flag also turns out for the football team and for Lithuanian fighters, cyclists and swimmers.

Choosing a size

A 5ft x 3ft works on a pole, a balcony or a club wall; a 3ft x 2ft on a shorter pole, a desk wall or a window; an 8ft x 5ft across a hall or on a large fixed pole; and a 20x12in on a car window or a hand pole. Flagtex is the printed polyester for indoor use and short spells outside, and DuraFlag the knitted heavyweight with reinforced edges for a flag that lives on a pole. Headers are sewn with brass eyelets, and clip or rope-and-toggle fittings are offered on the DuraFlag.

Lithuania bunting

Lithuania bunting is a tape of rectangular tricolour pennants in 3m and 9m lengths. A 3m run frames a doorway or the front of a stall; a 9m run goes along the wall of a community hall or around a tent for a 16 February dinner. The pennants are polyester with the colours printed through, so the bunting looks right from either side and copes with weather.

Hand flags and table flags

Lithuania hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for basketball arenas, parades and the Lithuanian school. The Lithuania table flag is 6x4in on a base for an office or a dinner table, and the large wooden table flag at 18x12in suits a reception desk or a community centre counter. Latvia, Estonia, Poland and Finland flags are under world flags.
