The Liechtenstein flag: blue, red and the princely crown

The flag of Liechtenstein is two horizontal bands, blue above red, with a gold crown in the upper hoist corner. Blue and red were the livery colours of the princely house and were confirmed as the national colours in the 1921 constitution; the blue is read as the sky and the red as the glow of evening hearths in the Rhine valley. The crown was added in 1937 after the 1936 Berlin Olympics revealed that Liechtenstein and Haiti had been flying identical plain blue-and-red flags, and it stands for the unity of the prince and the people. It was redrawn in 1982 and is set towards the hoist, never centred. Our Liechtenstein flag prints the crown in gold with its red cap lining at the correct size, which is the detail that separates the principality from Haiti’s civil flag.

Staatsfeiertag, FC Vaduz and the ski slopes

The Staatsfeiertag on 15 August is the national day, when the prince addresses the crowd on the meadow below Vaduz Castle, the whole country is invited to the castle garden and the evening ends with fireworks over the Rhine. Flags also come out for the prince’s birthday and for Fasnacht in February. In sport the principality punches far above its 40,000 people: Hanni Wenzel won two Olympic alpine golds at Lake Placid in 1980, her brother Andreas and niece Tina Weirather added medals, and the national football team plays its home games at the Rheinpark Stadion, where FC Vaduz also competes in the Swiss leagues and reaches European qualifiers through the Liechtenstein Cup. In Britain the flag appears at 15 August gatherings of Liechtensteiners working in the City, at Alpine ski clubs, stamp fairs, where Liechtenstein issues are prized, and in the collections of flag enthusiasts completing a European set.

Sizes, grades and fittings

Flagtex, our printed woven polyester for indoor displays and short spells outside, is offered in 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft. DuraFlag, the knitted heavyweight with a double-stitched hem for a flagpole in all weathers, comes as a 20x12in roped flag and a 5ft x 3ft with clips, so the full 8ft x 5ft size is Flagtex only for this country. All sizes have a sewn header, and the Flagtex grade carries two brass eyelets.

Liechtenstein bunting

Liechtenstein bunting is a tape of rectangular blue-and-red pennants, each carrying the crown, in 3m and 9m runs. Three metres suits a doorway, a chalet balcony or a classroom; nine metres will cover a hall, a marquee or a bar for a 15 August party. The double-sided polyester pennants shrug off a shower.

Hand flags and table flags

Liechtenstein hand flags on wooden sticks are stocked in 9x6in and 18x12in for football qualifiers, ski races and the national day. The Liechtenstein table flag is a 6x4in desk flag on a base, and the large wooden table flag at 18x12in suits a boardroom or a wine merchant’s counter. Switzerland, Austria, Germany and Luxembourg flags sit alongside it under world flags.

Liechtenstein flag FAQs

Why is there a crown on the Liechtenstein flag?

It was added in 1937 to distinguish the flag from Haiti’s, after the two countries turned up at the 1936 Olympics with the same blue-and-red flag. The crown represents the prince and the unity of the principality.

What do the colours of the Liechtenstein flag mean?

Blue for the sky and red for the evening fires of the homes in the valley; both were the colours of the princely house.

Where does the crown sit on the Liechtenstein flag?

In the upper hoist corner of the blue band, close to the pole, not in the centre.

When is Liechtenstein’s national day?

15 August, the Staatsfeiertag, celebrated with a ceremony at Vaduz Castle and fireworks in the evening.

Is a DuraFlag 8ft x 5ft Liechtenstein flag available?

Not at present. The 8ft x 5ft is stocked in Flagtex, and the DuraFlag grade covers the 20x12in roped flag and the 5ft x 3ft with clips.

Which size Liechtenstein flag for a wall or a bar?

A 5ft x 3ft above a bar or on a clubroom wall, a 3ft x 2ft in a window or over a desk.

How quickly can you deliver a Liechtenstein flag?

This range is stocked in and dispatched from our Stoke-on-Trent warehouse; an order before 2pm goes out the same day and arrives in 1–2 working days.
