The Laos flag: a full moon over the Mekong

The flag of Laos has three horizontal bands, red, blue and red, with the blue band twice the height of each red one, and a white disc in the centre. Red stands for the blood shed in the struggle for independence, blue for the wealth of the nation and the Mekong river, and the white disc for the full moon rising over the Mekong, as well as the unity of the people. It was first used by the Lao Issara independence movement in 1945 and became the national flag in 1975, when the Lao People's Democratic Republic was declared. It is one of the few communist-state flags with no star or hammer and sickle. Our Laos flag centres the moon precisely on the blue band.

National Day, Pi Mai and travellers

National Day on 2 December marks the founding of the republic in 1975. In mid-April Pi Mai, the Lao New Year, brings water blessings and street celebrations, and Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage town, fills with processions and visitors. In Britain the flag is flown by Lao families, Buddhist temples and backpackers returning from the Mekong.

Sizes, grades and fittings

Laos flags come in 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft, from £6.99. The moon reads well even on the 20x12in, while a 5ft x 3ft suits a pole. Flagtex is a light, economical printed weave; DuraFlag is a dense knitted grade with reinforced hems that copes with wind and rain, and comes with eyelets, clips or rope and toggle.

Laos bunting

Laos bunting has the red, blue and white moon flag on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m strings for a New Year party or a temple fair.

Hand flags and table flags

Laos hand flags come on wooden sticks in 9x6in and 18x12in. The 6x4in Laos table flag has a base, and the large wooden table flag is 18x12in. Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia are in our world flags.
