The Kazakhstan flag: sun, eagle and ornament on sky blue
The flag of Kazakhstan is a sky-blue field with a golden sun of 32 rays above a soaring steppe eagle, and a vertical band of national ornament, the koshkar-muiz or ram’s-horn pattern, in gold along the hoist. It was adopted on 4 June 1992, a few months after independence from the Soviet Union, from a design by the artist Shaken Niyazbekov. The single shade of blue stands for the endless sky over the steppe and for the unity of the many peoples of the country; the sun is life, wealth and abundance, its rays drawn as grains of wheat; the berkut eagle is the freedom and ambition of the state, a bird that Kazakh hunters have flown from horseback for centuries. Our Kazakhstan flag is printed with the ornament band on the hoist side where it belongs, in a true light blue rather than the darker royal shade some cheaper copies use.
Independence Day, Nauryz and Kazakh sport
Independence Day on 16 December recalls the declaration of 1991 and is kept as a two-day holiday with concerts in Astana and Almaty; Republic Day on 25 October was restored as a national holiday in 2022, Day of State Symbols falls on 4 June and Nauryz, the spring new year on 21 to 23 March, brings yurts, dombra music and kozhe soup to squares across the country. In sport the flag is best known from boxing, where Gennady Golovkin held the world middleweight titles for most of a decade, from cycling with the Astana team at the Tour de France, and from tennis, where Elena Rybakina won Wimbledon in 2022 as the first champion from Kazakhstan. Kairat Almaty reached the Champions League league phase in 2025 after beating Celtic on penalties, and the national team plays in the UEFA Nations League. In Britain the embassy in Pall Mall, the Kazakh student societies at universities from Edinburgh to Imperial and the business community in the City hold Independence Day receptions and Nauryz evenings where the blue flag is the centrepiece.
Sizes, grades and fittings
Choose the 5ft x 3ft for a flagpole, a restaurant wall or a stand at a boxing night; the 3ft x 2ft for a window, a student room or a market stall; the 8ft x 5ft for a stage backdrop or a tall fixed mast; and the 20x12in for a car window or a hand pole. Flagtex is our printed woven polyester for indoor displays and a few weeks outside, DuraFlag the knitted heavyweight with a double-stitched hem built to stay on a mast through a whole season. Both carry a sewn header with two brass eyelets, and the DuraFlag can come with clips or rope and toggle instead.
Kazakhstan bunting
Kazakhstan bunting strings rectangular sky-blue pennants, each with the sun and eagle, along a tape in 3m and 9m lengths. Three metres fits a doorway, a buffet table or a classroom wall; nine metres will run the length of a hall, a marquee or a yurt for Nauryz. The polyester pennants are printed on both faces and handle rain, so they can stay up for a long weekend.
Hand flags and table flags
Kazakhstan hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for fight nights, football away days and 16 December parades. The Kazakhstan table flag is a 6x4in desk flag on a base for an office, an embassy counter or a conference table, and the large wooden table flag at 18x12in suits a reception or a top table. Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Russia and Mongolia flags are all under world flags.
Kazakhstan flag FAQs
What do the symbols on the Kazakhstan flag mean?
The sun is life and abundance, the steppe eagle is freedom and the ambition of the nation, the blue field is the sky and the unity of the people, and the gold ornament at the hoist is the traditional ram’s-horn pattern of Kazakh art.
When was the Kazakhstan flag adopted?
On 4 June 1992, replacing the Soviet-era red flag. The date is now marked each year as Day of State Symbols.
Which side of the Kazakhstan flag has the ornament band?
The hoist side, next to the pole. On our flags it is printed at the header edge so it hangs correctly on a mast or a wall.
When is Kazakhstan Independence Day?
16 December, the anniversary of the 1991 declaration, celebrated with a public holiday on the 16th and 17th.
How does the Kazakhstan flag differ from the Kyrgyzstan or Uzbekistan flags?
Kyrgyzstan uses a red field with a yellow sun and yurt crown; Uzbekistan has blue, white and green stripes with a crescent and stars. Kazakhstan is the only one with an eagle on plain sky blue.
Which Kazakhstan flag size should I buy for a boxing night or a match?
A 5ft x 3ft to hold up or drape over the barrier, with 9x6in or 18x12in hand flags for the rest of the group.
