The Israeli flag: two stripes and the Star of David
The Israel flag is a white field with two horizontal blue stripes near the top and bottom edges and a blue Star of David, the Magen David, in the centre. The layout follows the tallit, the Jewish prayer shawl, which is white with blue or black stripes, and the six-pointed star has been a Jewish symbol since at least the seventeenth century. The design was first used by the Zionist movement in the 1890s, flown at the First Zionist Congress in Basel in 1897, and was adopted as the flag of the State of Israel on 28 October 1948, five months after independence. The official specification calls the blue “dark sky-blue”, and in practice the shade varies from a mid blue to a deep royal; our Israel flag uses a clean mid-to-dark blue on a bright white with the star drawn as two overlapping outlined triangles, as the specification requires, rather than a solid star.
Where the flag is flown
In the UK the Israeli flag is flown at Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel’s Independence Day, which falls in April or May according to the Hebrew calendar, at synagogues, Jewish community centres and schools, at embassy and cultural events, at Maccabi sports clubs and on Jewish holidays and simchas such as bar and bat mitzvahs. Supporters of the Israel national football team bring it to European Championship and World Cup qualifiers, Eurovision parties fly it on the night, and it is bought by universities, museums and churches for displays and study weeks on the Middle East. Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt and the rest of the region are under world flags.
Sizes, grades and fittings
The Israel flag comes in 20x12in for a car or a hand pole, 3ft x 2ft for a classroom, a hall or a short pole, 5ft x 3ft for a garden flagpole, a community centre or an event, and 8ft x 5ft for a synagogue forecourt, a stage or a tall pole. Flagtex is the woven-polyester print with brass eyelets for celebrations and seasonal use; DuraFlag is the heavier knitted grade with double-stitched hems and a reinforced header for a flag that stays on a pole all year, with clips or a rope and toggle to suit the halyard.
Israel bunting
Israel bunting is one of the few world-flag buntings we carry in the full run of lengths: 3m, 5m, 9m and 20m, in rectangle or triangle pennant cut, on weatherproof polyester sewn to a strong tape. A 3m length suits a classroom or a sukkah, 9m a community hall or a school corridor, and 20m a street, a marquee or a Yom Ha’atzmaut fair, with lengths joined end to end for longer runs.
Hand flags and table flags
Israel hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in, sold singly for a parade, a school assembly or a party. The Israel small table flag with base is the 6x4in desk flag for an office, a conference or a simcha table, the Israel wooden table flag and large 18x12in wooden table flag suit a dinner or an exhibition stand, and the satin table flag is the sleeved version for a chrome stand.
Israeli flag FAQs
What do the stripes on the Israeli flag represent?
The two blue stripes on white follow the pattern of the tallit, the Jewish prayer shawl. The Star of David in the centre is the Magen David, a long-standing Jewish symbol.
What shade of blue is the Israel flag?
The 1948 specification says dark sky-blue, and flags in use range from a medium blue to a deep royal blue. Ours is a clean mid-to-dark blue on white.
When is Israel’s Independence Day?
Yom Ha’atzmaut is on 5 Iyar in the Hebrew calendar, which falls in April or May; the date on the civil calendar changes each year.
What size Israel flag for a synagogue or community centre?
5ft x 3ft for a hall wall or a pole up to about 6m, 8ft x 5ft for a forecourt flagpole or a stage. Choose the DuraFlag grade for a flag that stays outside.
How long is the Israel bunting?
3m, 5m, 9m and 20m lengths in rectangle or triangle cut, joinable for longer runs across a hall or a street.
Are the hand flags sold singly or in packs?
Singly, in 9x6in and 18x12in on wooden sticks, so you can order the exact number for a class or a parade.
How quickly can an Israel flag be delivered?
Every item here is stocked in and dispatched from our Stoke-on-Trent warehouse; order before 2pm on a working day for same-day dispatch and free 1–2 day UK delivery.
