The Iraqi flag: red, white and black with the green takbir

The Iraq flag is a horizontal tricolour of red, white and black, the Arab Liberation colours shared with Egypt, Syria and Yemen, with the words Allahu Akbar written in green Kufic script across the white band. The current version was adopted on 22 January 2008 and is the fourth form of the same basic flag since 1963. The original 1963 design had three green stars in the white band, for a planned union with Egypt and Syria that never happened; in 1991 the takbir was added between the stars in a script based on Saddam Hussein’s handwriting; in 2004 the script was changed to a standard Kufic form and in 2008 the stars were removed, leaving the flag flown today. Our Iraq flag is the 2008 design in 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft, and the three earlier flags are stocked in 5ft x 3ft for collectors, museums and film work: the 1963 to 1991 flag, the 1991 to 2004 flag and the 2004 to 2008 flag.

National Day, the Lions of Mesopotamia and Iraqis in Britain

Iraq’s National Day is 3 October, the anniversary of independence from the British mandate in 1932 and a public holiday since 2023, and Army Day on 6 January is also marked with flags. The football team, the Lions of Mesopotamia, is the surest way to get an Iraqi flag out in the UK: the 2007 Asian Cup win is still celebrated, Gulf Cup and World Cup qualifiers fill the cafés, and the World Cup team bundle puts a flag and hand flags in one parcel. Iraqi, Kurdish, Assyrian and Chaldean communities in London, Manchester, Birmingham and Cardiff use the flag at Eid, Newroz, church festivals, graduations and community dinners, and Iraqi restaurants and bakeries keep one on the wall.

Which size Iraq flag?

5ft x 3ft suits a garden pole, a shop front, a café wall or a party; 3ft x 2ft a bedroom, a stall or a short pole; 8ft x 5ft a flagpole or a stage; 20x12in a car window or a hand pole. All four come with a sewn header and brass eyelets, with clips or a rope and toggle on the DuraFlag grade.

Flagtex or DuraFlag?

Flagtex is the printed woven polyester at £6.99 for a 5ft x 3ft, the choice for a match, a celebration or a few weeks on a pole. DuraFlag is the 150gsm knitted polyester with double-stitched hems and a reinforced header for a flag that flies all year outside a community centre or a restaurant. Both grades are stocked in and dispatched from our Stoke-on-Trent warehouse, with same-day dispatch on orders before 2pm.

Iraq bunting

Iraq bunting carries the 2008 flag on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths, on weatherproof polyester sewn to a tape. 3m frames a doorway or a sweet table; 9m runs a café frontage or a hall for a National Day dinner or a football night.

Hand flags and table flags

Iraq hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for the stadium, the parade and the school. The Iraq table flag with base is the 6x4in desk flag for a restaurant counter or an embassy office, with a wooden table flag and a satin table flag for a reception. The 1963 to 1991 three-star flag also comes as a small table flag. The Kurdistan flag has its own page, and Iran, Syria, Jordan and Kuwait are under world flags.

Iraq flag FAQs

What does the writing on the Iraqi flag say?

Allahu Akbar, “God is greatest”, in green Kufic script across the white band. It was first added in 1991 and the script was standardised in 2004.

Why were the stars removed from the Iraq flag?

The three green stars of 1963 stood for a proposed union with Egypt and Syria and were later linked to the Ba’ath Party. The 2008 law removed them as part of a wider redesign; the colours and the takbir were kept.

Which Iraq flag is the current one?

The 2008 design: red, white and black bands with the green Kufic takbir and no stars. That is the flag listed as the Iraq flag; the 1963, 1991 and 2004 versions are labelled by their dates.

When is Iraq’s National Day?

3 October, the date of independence in 1932, made a public holiday in 2023. Army Day on 6 January and Republic Day on 14 July are also flag days.

What size Iraq flag for a telescopic pole?

5ft x 3ft on a 6m telescopic pole or a standard garden pole; 8ft x 5ft only on a fixed pole of 25ft or more.

Do the historical Iraq flags come in other sizes?

No, the 1963, 1991 and 2004 flags are stocked in 5ft x 3ft only, in the Flagtex grade. The current flag is in four sizes and two grades.
