The Iranian flag: two designs, one tricolour

Every Iran flag since 1906 has been a horizontal tricolour of green, white and red; what changes is the emblem in the white band. The current national flag, adopted on 29 July 1980, carries a red emblem in the centre made up of four crescents and a sword arranged to read as the word Allah, with the phrase Allahu Akbar written 22 times in white Kufic script along the inner edges of the green and red bands, 11 on each, for the date of 22 Bahman (11 February 1979). We stock it as the Iran DuraFlag in 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft. The earlier flag, in use with variations from the Qajar period until 1979, shows the Lion and Sun: a lion holding a sabre in front of a rising sun, an emblem of Persia for centuries before it was fixed on the tricolour. It is stocked as the Iran Old (Persia) flag in the same four sizes and the Iran (Lion and Sun) flag in 3ft x 2ft and 5ft x 3ft. Both are stocked without comment on which should be flown; the diaspora in Britain uses both.

Nowruz, Team Melli and Iranians in the UK

The biggest date on the calendar is Nowruz, the Persian New Year at the spring equinox on 20 or 21 March, with the Chaharshanbe Suri fire-jumping the Tuesday night before and Sizdah Bedar picnics thirteen days after. Iranian communities in Kensington, Ealing, Finchley and Manchester mark it with flags on restaurants, cultural centres and community halls. On the sport side it is Team Melli at the Asian Cup and the World Cup, the World Cup team bundle covering the flag and hand flags in one, and the wrestlers and weightlifters at the Olympics. Yalda night on 21 December, Mehregan in October and Persian poetry and film evenings bring the table flags out through the rest of the year.

Sizes, grades and fittings

5ft x 3ft is the size for a restaurant front, a garden pole or a community-hall wall; 3ft x 2ft for a bedroom, a stall or a short pole; 8ft x 5ft for a flagpole or a stage backdrop; 20x12in for a car or a hand pole. The Lion and Sun flags come in Flagtex printed woven polyester at £6.99 for a 5ft x 3ft, with a DuraFlag option on the Old (Persia) design. The current flag is DuraFlag only: 150gsm knitted polyester, double-stitched hems, a reinforced header and clips or rope-and-toggle fittings, from £14.99. Everything on this page is stocked in and dispatched from our Stoke-on-Trent warehouse, the same working day for orders before 2pm.

Iran bunting

Iran bunting repeats the current flag on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths on weatherproof polyester sewn to a tape. 3m dresses a Haft-sin table or a doorway; 9m runs the length of a restaurant or a hall for a Nowruz party.

Hand flags and table flags

Iran hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for the stadium and the parade. The Iran table flag with base is the 6x4in desk flag, with a wooden table flag and a satin table flag for a reception desk. The Lion and Sun has its own table flag and satin table flag. Afghanistan, Iraq, Turkey and the Kurdistan flag are under world flags.

Iran flag FAQs

What does the emblem on the Iranian flag mean?

The red emblem is a stylised rendering of the word Allah, made of four crescents and a central sword, designed by Hamid Nadimi and adopted in 1980. The white script along the bands repeats Allahu Akbar 22 times for 22 Bahman, the date of the 1979 revolution.

What is the Lion and Sun flag?

The green, white and red tricolour with a lion holding a sword in front of a sun, the emblem of Iran from the Safavid era until 1979. It is stocked in two versions and is widely flown by Iranians abroad.

Which Iran flag should I buy?

The current flag with the central emblem is the one flown by the state, at sports events and by most official bodies; the Lion and Sun is the one most of the UK diaspora uses at cultural and community events. We stock both and leave the choice to you.

Is the current Iran flag available in Flagtex?

At present the current design is stocked in the DuraFlag grade only, in four sizes from 20x12in to 8ft x 5ft. The Lion and Sun flags are in Flagtex, with DuraFlag on the Old (Persia) version.

When is Nowruz?

At the spring equinox, 20 or 21 March, with celebrations running for thirteen days to Sizdah Bedar. It is the main flag-buying date for Iranian, Afghan, Kurdish and Central Asian communities in the UK.

What size Iran flag for a restaurant front?

5ft x 3ft on a wall bracket or a short pole. For a flagpole of 20ft or more use 8ft x 5ft, and for a car window or a hand pole 20x12in.
