The Indonesian flag: red over white

Indonesia’s flag is two equal horizontal bands, red above white, in a 2:3 ratio. It is known as the Sang Saka Merah-Putih, the lofty bicolour, or simply the Merah-Putih, and the colours go back to the banners of the Majapahit empire in the thirteenth century; red is read as the body and courage, white as the soul and purity. The flag was first hoisted on 17 August 1945, the day Sukarno read the proclamation of independence in Jakarta, and that original flag, sewn by his wife Fatmawati, is kept as a national relic while a replica is raised at the palace each Independence Day. It is often confused with Monaco, which has the same colours in a squarer 4:5 shape, and with Poland, which is white over red. Our Indonesia flag uses the correct 2:3 proportions with the bands equal in depth.

Hari Merdeka, badminton and the diaspora

Independence Day, Hari Kemerdekaan or Hari Merdeka on 17 August, is the big one: flag-raising ceremonies, the whole month of August in red and white, and in the UK a reception at the embassy, an Indonesian community fun day and the student societies’ own ceremonies at Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds and London universities. Badminton is where Indonesian flags are most visible in Britain, at the All England in Birmingham each March, where Indonesian supporters are reliably the loudest in the arena. Football fans fly it for Timnas Garuda, and it turns up at the Indonesian Weekend market in London, at Eid gatherings and at Indonesian restaurants on 17 August.

Picking a size

5ft x 3ft is the usual choice for a flagpole, a stage or a wall; 3ft x 2ft fits a short pole or a window; 8ft x 5ft will fill the backdrop at a community hall; and 20x12in works on a car or a hand pole. Flagtex is the printed polyester for indoor use and short periods outdoors, and DuraFlag the heavier knitted polyester with double-stitched edges for a longer life on a pole. Sewn headers and brass eyelets come as standard, and the DuraFlag can be had with clips or rope and toggle.

Indonesia bunting

Indonesia bunting is a string of rectangular red and white pennants on a tape in 3m and 9m lengths. One 3m length does a doorway or a buffet table for 17 August; a 9m length runs the width of a hall or round a gazebo at a community day. The pennants are weather-resistant polyester printed on both sides, so they can stay up through an August shower.

Hand flags and table flags

Indonesia hand flags on wooden sticks are offered in 9x6in and 18x12in, for the badminton stands, parades and school assemblies. The Indonesia table flag is a 6x4in flag on a base for an office, an embassy desk or a restaurant counter, and the large wooden table flag at 18x12in suits a reception or an event table. Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines and East Timor flags are all under world flags.

Indonesian flag FAQs

What do the red and white of the Indonesian flag mean?

Red is usually explained as courage and the body, white as purity and the spirit; together they are the colours of the Majapahit empire’s banners.

Is the Indonesian flag the same as Monaco’s?

The colours and order are the same, red over white, but Indonesia’s flag is 2:3 and Monaco’s is 4:5, so the Indonesian flag is noticeably longer.

When is Indonesian Independence Day?

17 August, the date of the 1945 proclamation. Flags go up across Indonesia for the whole month, and UK communities hold their ceremonies on or around the date.

What size Indonesia flag for a community hall?

8ft x 5ft for a stage backdrop, 5ft x 3ft for the wall behind a table or a pole outside, and 9x6in hand flags for the audience.

Can the Indonesia flag be left outside?

The DuraFlag grade is built for extended outdoor use and will last a season on a pole; the Flagtex is better for indoor displays or occasional days outside.

Does the Indonesian flag have a crest version?

No. The national flag is the plain red and white bicolour; the Garuda coat of arms appears on official seals but not on the flag.
