The Hungarian flag: red, white and green
The flag of Hungary is a horizontal tricolour of red over white over green in equal bands. The colours come from the medieval Hungarian coat of arms, the red and white stripes of the Árpád dynasty and the green triple mount beneath the patriarchal cross, and they were first flown together as a national flag in the revolution of 1848. The tricolour was confirmed by law in 1957, with the ratio fixed at 1:2 in the Fundamental Law of 2012, and the common reading of the colours, red for strength, white for fidelity and green for hope, is written into that law. In 1956 the communist emblem was cut out of the centre of the flag by the crowds in Budapest, so a plain tricolour with a hole became the symbol of the uprising, much as it would in Romania thirty-three years later. Our Hungary flag is printed in the specified deep red and green with a crisp white centre band, without arms, which is the civil flag flown by the public.
St Stephen’s Day, 15 March and the Magyars
Hungary has three national days and the flag is out for all of them: 15 March for the 1848 revolution, 20 August for St Stephen and the founding of the state, which is the main summer holiday with fireworks over the Danube, and 23 October for 1956. In the UK the Hungarian Cultural Centre in London, Hungarian churches and Saturday schools, and the Hungarian communities in London, Bristol, Manchester and Edinburgh mark these dates, and Hungarian restaurants and food stalls keep a flag up all year. In sport the national football team has qualified for the last three European Championships, the Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring is a fixture of the Formula 1 calendar, and Hungary’s swimmers, kayakers, fencers, handball teams and water polo sides are regularly on the podium at the Olympics and world championships.
Hungary flag sizes and grades
Our 5ft x 3ft Hungary flag is the size for a flagpole, a restaurant front or a fan zone, 3ft x 2ft is for a short pole, a desk wall or a market stall, 8ft x 5ft is for a tall fixed pole or a stage, and 20x12in is the car window and hand-pole size. The Flagtex grade is a printed woven polyester for occasional and indoor use; DuraFlag is a knitted polyester, heavier and double-stitched, for a pole that is in use the whole year. A sewn header and two brass eyelets are standard, and clips or a rope and toggle can be chosen on the DuraFlag.
Hungary bunting
Hungary bunting repeats the tricolour on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths, sewn to a tape. It suits a 20 August street party, a Hungarian wedding or a bar showing the national team, and because the pennants are weatherproof polyester it can hang outside for the season. Plain red, white and green lengths from the bunting range extend a run cheaply.
Hand flags and table flags
Hungary hand flags on wooden sticks are stocked in 9x6in and 18x12in for football, Grand Prix weekends and school events. The Hungary table flag is the 6x4in desk flag on a base for an office, an embassy desk or a restaurant table, and the large wooden table flag at 18x12in is the reception-counter version. Neighbours Austria, Slovakia, Romania, Croatia and Serbia are under world flags.
Hungarian flag FAQs
What do the colours of the Hungarian flag mean?
Red for strength, white for fidelity and green for hope, a reading that was written into Hungary’s Fundamental Law in 2012. The colours themselves come from the medieval Hungarian coat of arms.
How do I tell the Hungarian flag from the Italian flag?
The same three colours, but Hungary’s are horizontal stripes with red at the top, while Italy’s are vertical with green at the hoist. Bulgaria’s flag is also horizontal but runs white, green, red, and Iran’s runs green, white, red.
Which way up does the Hungarian flag go?
Red at the top, green at the bottom. Hung vertically from a building, the red band should be on the left as you face it.
When is Hungary’s national day?
20 August, St Stephen’s Day, is the state foundation day and the biggest celebration, with 15 March (the 1848 revolution) and 23 October (the 1956 uprising) also national holidays.
Does the Hungarian flag have a coat of arms on it?
The civil flag flown by the public, and the one we stock, is the plain tricolour. A version with the coat of arms in the centre is used by the state and the armed forces but is not the national flag.
Which size Hungary flag suits a garden flagpole?
5ft x 3ft for a 6m telescopic or wall-mounted pole; 8ft x 5ft only on a fixed pole of 25ft or more; 3ft x 2ft on a short pole.
How quickly will a Hungary flag arrive?
Everything here is stocked in and dispatched from our Stoke-on-Trent warehouse the same day when ordered before 2pm, for delivery in 1–2 working days anywhere in the UK.
