The Honduras flag: blue, white and five stars
The flag of Honduras has three horizontal bands, blue, white and blue, with five blue five-pointed stars arranged in an X in the centre of the white band. The blue bands stand for the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea and the white for the land between them and for peace, while the five stars represent the five nations of the former Federal Republic of Central America, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica, and the hope that they might one day reunite. The stars were added by decree on 16 February 1866 to the federation’s blue-white-blue design. With no coat of arms and a simple pattern of stars, the Honduran flag is easy to tell apart from the flags of El Salvador and Nicaragua, which carry emblems on the white band. Our Honduras flag shows the five stars clearly in the centre.
Independence, Flag Day and Los Catrachos
Independence Day on 15 September is shared with the rest of Central America, with parades, marching bands and the flag on every school, and Flag Day on 1 September opens the patriotic month. Hondurans call themselves Catrachos, and the football team, Los Catrachos or La H, draws passionate support at the Estadio Olímpico Metropolitano in San Pedro Sula. The Bay Islands of Roatán and Utila are known to British divers for the Mesoamerican reef and the whale shark season, and the Mayan city of Copán draws archaeology travellers. The UK’s Honduran community is small, centred on London’s Latin American churches and cultural groups, and the flag is also used by Garifuna cultural groups, volunteers and gap-year travellers.
