The Guyana flag: the Golden Arrowhead

Guyana’s flag, known as the Golden Arrowhead, is a green field with a long golden triangle pointing from the hoist to the fly, edged in white, and a shorter red triangle inside it edged in black. It was designed by the American vexillologist Whitney Smith and adopted at independence on 26 May 1966, with the white and black fimbriations and the swap of the original red field for green added by the College of Arms in London. Green is the forests and the agriculture that cover most of the country, white its many rivers, gold its mineral wealth, black the endurance of the people and red their zeal and energy in building the nation. The arrowhead itself suggests the country’s forward movement and recalls the arrows of the Amerindian peoples. Our Guyana flag is printed with the two triangles in the specified proportions, the gold reaching the fly edge and the red point ending at the centre.

Independence Day, Mashramani and the cricket

Independence Day on 26 May is marked by the flag-raising at D’Urban Park in Georgetown at midnight and a day of parades, and Republic Day on 23 February is Mashramani, the carnival of floats and costume bands along the streets of the capital. Arrival Day on 5 May, Phagwah, Diwali and Eid reflect the mix of Indo-Guyanese, Afro-Guyanese, Amerindian and other communities and bring the flag out through the year. Cricket is the national game: Providence Stadium hosts West Indies internationals and the Guyana Amazon Warriors, champions of the Caribbean Premier League in 2023, and Guyana has given the West Indies Clive Lloyd, Rohan Kanhai, Lance Gibbs, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Carl Hooper. Britain has one of the largest Guyanese communities outside the Caribbean, concentrated in London, Birmingham and Manchester, with 26 May dinners, Mash-style fetes, cricket club days and a Guyana High Commission in Bayswater that flies the flag for every occasion.

Sizes, grades and fittings

A 5ft x 3ft suits a flagpole, a cricket club or a community hall; a 3ft x 2ft a window, a shop or a desk wall; an 8ft x 5ft a large fixed mast or a stage backdrop; and a 20x12in a car window or a hand pole. Flagtex is printed woven polyester for indoor use and short periods outside, and DuraFlag is the knitted heavyweight with double-stitched hems for a flag kept up through a season. Each has a sewn header and brass eyelets, with clips or rope and toggle available on the DuraFlag.

Guyana bunting

Guyana bunting repeats the Golden Arrowhead on rectangular pennants sewn to a tape, in 3m and 9m runs. Three metres suits a doorway, a buffet or a classroom for 26 May; nine metres goes down a hall, a marquee or a cricket club bar for Mashramani. The polyester pennants are printed on both faces and can be left out in rain.

Hand flags and table flags

Guyana hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for cricket grounds, Mash parades and school Commonwealth days. The Guyana table flag is a 6x4in flag on a base for an office or a restaurant table, and the large wooden table flag at 18x12in suits a high commission desk or a reception. Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Suriname, Barbados and Brazil flags are under world flags.

Guyana flag FAQs

Why is the Guyana flag called the Golden Arrowhead?

For the long gold triangle pointing from the hoist to the fly, which suggests the forward thrust of the nation and recalls the arrows of Guyana’s Amerindian peoples.

What do the colours of the Guyana flag mean?

Green for the forests and farmland, white for the rivers, gold for mineral wealth, black for endurance and red for the zeal of the people.

Who designed the Guyana flag?

Whitney Smith, the American vexillologist, with the white and black borders and the green field settled by the College of Arms before independence in 1966.

When is Guyana Independence Day?

26 May, marking independence from Britain in 1966. Republic Day on 23 February is celebrated as Mashramani.

Which way should the arrowhead point?

From the hoist towards the fly, so the point of the gold triangle is at the free edge of the flag and the red triangle sits against the pole.

Which size Guyana flag for a cricket match?

A 5ft x 3ft to hold up or drape over a rail, with 9x6in or 18x12in hand flags for the group in the stand.
