The Guinea flag: work, justice and solidarity

Guinea's flag is three equal vertical stripes of red, yellow and green. The colours are matched to the national motto, Travail, Justice, Solidarité: red for work and the blood of the martyrs, yellow for justice and the sun, and green for solidarity and the country's vegetation. Guinea was the first French colony in Africa to reject the French Community, voting no in the 1958 referendum and becoming independent on 2 October 1958. Its pan-African colours were inspired by the flag of Ghana, independent a year earlier. The flag is the mirror image of Mali's, which reads green, yellow, red. Our Guinea flag has red at the hoist, as it should.

Independence Day and Guinean football

Independence Day on 2 October is the national holiday. Guinea is rich in bauxite and is the source of several of West Africa's great rivers, including the Niger, which earns it the nickname the water tower of West Africa. The national team, Syli Nationale, has produced Premier League players such as Naby Keïta. Guinean families and students in the UK fly the flag on 2 October and for Africa Cup of Nations matches.

Sizes, grades and fittings

Guinea flags come in 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft from £6.99. The bold stripes look strong at any size, from the 20x12in up to the 8ft x 5ft. For indoor or short-term use Flagtex, a lightweight printed polyester, is the budget choice; for outside, DuraFlag, a thicker knitted polyester, lasts longer and can be ordered with eyelets, clips or rope and toggle.

Guinea bunting

Guinea bunting sets the red, yellow and green on rectangular flags in 3m and 9m, ready for a family party or a match screening.

Hand flags and table flags

Guinea hand flags are on wooden sticks in 9x6in and 18x12in. The Guinea table flag is 6x4in on a base, and the large wooden table flag 18x12in. Mali, Sierra Leone and Guinea-Bissau are in our world flags.
