The Grenada flag: the Spice Isle on a banner

Grenada’s flag is a red-bordered flag enclosing a rectangle divided diagonally into gold triangles top and bottom and green triangles at hoist and fly, with a gold star on a red disc in the centre, six smaller gold stars along the top and bottom borders and a nutmeg in the hoist triangle. It was designed by Anthony C. George, a Grenadian artist, and raised at independence on 7 February 1974. Red is courage and vitality, gold the wisdom and warmth of the people and the sunshine, and green the fertility of the land and its agriculture. The seven stars are the island’s seven parishes, the central one for St George’s, the capital, and the nutmeg marks Grenada’s place as one of the world’s largest producers of the spice, the reason for its Spice Isle name. The flag flown at sea has a longer 1:2 shape, but the 3:5 land version is the one used on poles and at matches. Our Grenada flag prints the nutmeg in its correct split-shell detail and the seven stars in gold on the red border.

Independence Day, Spicemas and Kirani James

Independence Day on 7 February is marked with a national parade at the Tanteen grounds in St George’s and a month of events in the colours, and in 2024 the fiftieth anniversary brought the flag out on every building. Spicemas, the August carnival, climaxes with J’ouvert and the Jab Jab in oil and chains, then the pretty mas on Carnival Tuesday, and Carriacou holds its own carnival in February. In sport the flag is best known for Kirani James, the 400m Olympic champion in London in 2012 and a medallist in Rio and Tokyo, for cricket at the National Stadium in St George’s where West Indies Tests and the Spice Isle T10 are played, and for Lindon Victor and Anderson Peters in the decathlon and javelin. Grenadian communities in Huddersfield, London, Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester hold Independence dinners, Spicemas-style fetes and church services, and the Grenada High Commission in London keeps the flag flying for 7 February and Commonwealth Day.

Sizes, grades and fittings

Pick a 5ft x 3ft for a flagpole, a rum shop wall or a community hall; a 3ft x 2ft for a window, a bedroom or a stall; an 8ft x 5ft for a large fixed pole or a stage backdrop; and a 20x12in for a car or a hand pole. Flagtex is the printed woven polyester for indoor use and short spells outdoors, DuraFlag the heavier knitted polyester with double-stitched edges for a flag that lives on a mast through the year. Both grades come with a sewn header and brass eyelets; the DuraFlag can be finished with clips or rope and toggle.

Grenada bunting

Grenada bunting is a line of rectangular pennants carrying the full flag design with the nutmeg and stars, in 3m and 9m lengths. Three metres is right for a doorway, a buffet or a classroom on 7 February; nine metres dresses a hall, a marquee or a bar for a Spicemas party. Pennants are showerproof polyester with the print showing on both faces.

Hand flags and table flags

Grenada hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for carnival, cricket and the Independence parade. The Grenada table flag is 6x4in on a base for an office, a restaurant or a dinner table, and the large wooden table flag at 18x12in suits a high commission desk or a reception. St Vincent and the Grenadines, St Lucia, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago and Dominica flags are under world flags.
