Erfalasorput: the flag of Greenland
The flag of Greenland, Erfalasorput or our flag in Greenlandic, is split horizontally into white over red, with a circle set towards the hoist that is red in its upper half and white in its lower half. The white band is the ice cap that covers most of the island and the red band the ocean, while the disc is the sun half-sunk below the horizon, its red half the sun itself and its white half the icebergs and pack ice. It was designed by Thue Christiansen, a Greenlandic artist and teacher, chosen by the home rule parliament and first raised on 21 June 1985. It is the only flag of a Nordic country or territory without a Nordic cross, which makes it stand out next to Denmark, the Faroe Islands and Iceland. Greenland is self-governing within the Kingdom of Denmark, and our Greenland flag has the disc offset towards the hoist exactly as in the official design.
National Day, the Arctic Winter Games and the midnight sun
Greenland’s National Day falls on 21 June, the longest day of the year, with the flag raised in Nuuk and every settlement, kaffemik gatherings, drum dancing and kayak displays; the same date was chosen for the start of self-government in 2009. Greenlandic athletes compete at the Arctic Winter Games, which Nuuk hosted in 2016, and the national handball team is the island’s best-known side. In Britain the flag belongs to polar travellers, mountaineers and sea kayakers, to scientists who work on the ice sheet, to passengers on Arctic cruises and to the Greenlanders studying or working in the UK.
Sizes, grades and fittings
Greenland flags come in Flagtex, the printed woven polyester with eyelets, in 3ft x 2ft and 5ft x 3ft, and in DuraFlag, the knitted heavyweight with double-stitched hems, in 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft with clips and 20x12in with rope and toggle. The 5ft x 3ft DuraFlag suits an expedition base or a garden pole, the 3ft x 2ft a lecture hall or a window, the 8ft x 5ft a large mast and the 20x12in a sledge, a kayak deck or a car.
Greenland bunting
Greenland bunting strings rectangular pennants of the white and red flag with its half-red, half-white disc, in 3m and 9m lengths. A 3m length suits a door, a school geography display or a kaffemik table; a 9m length goes round a hall or a garden on 21 June. Each Greenlandic pennant is printed on both sides of a weatherproof polyester.
Hand flags and table flags
Greenland hand flags on wooden sticks come in 18x12in, for National Day, school projects and expedition send-offs. For a desk there is the Greenland small table flag at 6x4in on a base, the large wooden Greenland table flag at 18x12in and the Greenland satin table flag in a soft satin fabric. Denmark, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Norway and Canada flags are under world flags.
