The Ghana flag: red, gold, green and the black star

The Ghana flag is three horizontal bands of red, gold and green with a black five-pointed star in the centre. It was designed by Theodosia Okoh, a teacher and artist, and first raised on 6 March 1957 when the Gold Coast became Ghana, the first sub-Saharan colony to gain independence from Britain. Red is for the blood of those who died in the struggle, gold for the mineral wealth of the country, green for its forests and farms, and the black star, taken from Marcus Garvey’s Black Star Line, is the lodestar of African freedom. Ghana was the first country to use the red, gold and green of the Ethiopian flag in this way, which is why so many later African flags carry the same colours. From 1964 to 1966 the middle band was white; the gold came back with the Second Republic and has stayed ever since. Our Ghana flag keeps the 2:3 ratio and a proper gold rather than lemon yellow.

Independence Day, the Black Stars and Ghana in Britain

6 March is the day every Ghanaian flag in the UK comes out, with services, dinners and flag-raisings in London, Manchester, Birmingham and Leeds. Ghana Party in the Park in London each July is the biggest single gathering of the diaspora, and the same flags go to outdoorings, engagements, funerals and the Homowo and Hogbetsotso festivals as celebrated here. The Black Stars draw the sport crowd, from the Africa Cup of Nations to the World Cup team bundle of flag and hand flags, with the Black Queens and the Olympic team behind them. Ghanaian restaurants, churches and barbers in Tottenham, Peckham and Croydon keep a flag up all year.

Which size Ghana flag?

5ft x 3ft is the size for a garden pole, a church front, a shop or a party wall; 3ft x 2ft for a bedroom, a stall or a short pole; 8ft x 5ft for a community-centre flagpole, a stage or a Party in the Park gazebo; 20x12in for a car window or a hand pole. All sizes have a sewn header and brass eyelets, and the DuraFlag grade takes clips or a rope and toggle.

Flagtex or DuraFlag?

Flagtex is the printed woven polyester at £6.99 for a 5ft x 3ft, right for 6 March, a party or a football tournament. DuraFlag is the 150gsm knitted polyester with double-stitched hems and a reinforced header for a flag flown all year outside a church, a shop or a hall. Both grades are stocked in and dispatched from our Stoke-on-Trent warehouse, going out the same working day on orders before 2pm.

Ghana bunting

Ghana bunting puts the black star flag on every rectangular pennant, in 3m and 9m lengths on weatherproof polyester sewn to a strong tape. A 3m length frames a doorway or a buffet table; 9m runs the length of a hall for an outdooring or along a market stall on 6 March. For a street or a church front, join two or three 9m lengths.

Hand flags and table flags

Ghana hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for the parade, the stadium and the school assembly. The Ghana table flag with base is the 6x4in desk flag for a restaurant counter, a high commission office or a wedding top table, with a wooden table flag and a satin table flag on a chrome base for a reception. Nigeria, Togo, Côte d’Ivoire and the rest of West Africa are under world flags.

Ghana flag FAQs

What does the black star on the Ghana flag mean?

It is the lodestar of African freedom, taken from the Black Star Line, the shipping company Marcus Garvey founded in 1919. Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars, is named after it.

Who designed the Ghanaian flag?

Theodosia Salome Okoh, a Ghanaian teacher and artist, in 1957. She is one of very few women to have designed a national flag, and the National Hockey Stadium in Accra is named after her.

Why do Ghana and Ethiopia have the same colours?

Ghana adopted the red, gold and green of Ethiopia, the one African country never colonised, as pan-African colours at independence. Guinea, Mali, Senegal, Cameroon and others followed Ghana’s lead.

When is Ghana Independence Day?

6 March, marking independence from Britain in 1957. Republic Day is 1 July, and Founders’ Day on 4 August and Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day on 21 September are also public holidays.

What size Ghana flag for a telescopic pole?

5ft x 3ft on a 6m pole, or 8ft x 5ft on a fixed pole of 25ft or more. The DuraFlag grade with clips fits straight onto a telescopic pole’s rings.

Was the Ghana flag ever different?

Yes. Between 1964 and 1966 the gold band was replaced by white under Nkrumah’s one-party state. The original red, gold and green returned after 1966 and is the only version we stock.
