Germany flags: the German flag in black, red and gold
The German flag, the Bundesflagge, is three horizontal bands of black, red and gold in a 3:5 proportion, black uppermost. The colours go back to the uniforms of the Lützow Free Corps in the wars against Napoleon and were taken up by the students and liberals of the 1848 Frankfurt Parliament as the colours of a united Germany. The Weimar Republic made them national in 1919, the Federal Republic restored them in May 1949, and since reunification on 3 October 1990 the same tricolour has flown over the whole country. Our Germany flag is printed with the bands in the correct order, which matters because black-red-gold reversed is the flag of nobody at all, and a rival shade of “yellow” is the quickest way to spot a poor copy.
Alongside the plain national flag we stock the Germany crest flag with the federal eagle, the East Germany flag with the hammer, compass and ring of rye used by the DDR from 1959 to 1990, and a Germany smiley face flag for the fan park.
Oktoberfest, Unity Day and the football
German flags sell in two waves. The first is Oktoberfest, when pubs, breweries and student unions across Britain build beer halls from mid-September into early October and need Germany bunting by the metre and Bavarian lozenges to go with it. The second is tournament football, when every German bar and expat club wants a 5ft x 3ft for the window and hand flags for the bar. German Unity Day on 3 October and the Christmas-market season carry demand through to December.
Sizes and uses
5ft x 3ft is the size for a garden telescopic pole, a bar frontage or a wall bracket. 3ft x 2ft suits a 10–12ft pole, a classroom or a student room; 8ft x 5ft fills a club flagpole, a stage backdrop or a beer-tent gable. Eyelets come as standard, with rope and toggle or clips available on the DuraFlag grade.
Flagtex, Flagtex Nylon and DuraFlag
Flagtex is the budget printed polyester, printed through so both faces show the design, and it is all most parties and fan zones need. Flagtex Nylon has a tighter weave and a quadruple-stitched fly end for a season of outdoor use. The DuraFlag Germany flag is the permanent option: 150gsm knitted polyester, double-stitched hems, a reinforced header and UV-fast inks for flags that stay up on a school, hotel or consulate pole all year.
Germany bunting
Germany bunting carries the national flag on every pennant, printed on weatherproof polyester and sewn to a strong tape so it survives a fortnight outside a beer tent. For a plainer look the black, red and gold triangle bunting alternates solid-colour pennants, while Germany crest bunting and East Germany bunting cover themed events and Cold War displays.
Hand flags, table flags and windsocks
Germany hand flags on wooden sticks are sold singly and in packs for supporters’ clubs, schools and parades, with crest and East Germany versions to match. The Germany table flag with base suits a reception desk, a German restaurant or a language-school office, and the Germany windsock brings colour to a campsite or garden pole.
German state flags: Bavaria, Berlin and the sixteen Länder
Every one of Germany’s sixteen federal states is in the German state flags range: the white-and-blue lozenges of Bavaria with and without crest, the bear of Berlin, Hamburg, Bremen, Hesse, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Schleswig-Holstein, Thuringia, Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Baden-Württemberg. Historic regions such as Franconia, East Frisia, Pomerania and East Prussia sit beside them, several with bunting, hand flags and table flags of their own. Austria, Switzerland and the rest of Europe are under world flags, and Imperial, Weimar and wartime designs for re-enactors and museums are a related range under German military flags.
German flag FAQs
Which way up does the German flag go?
Black at the top, red in the middle, gold at the bottom. Hung vertically from a banner bar, black goes on the left as the viewer sees it.
What does the German flag mean?
Black, red and gold were the colours of the volunteer Lützow Free Corps of 1813 and became the colours of the German unity movement in 1848. There is no official meaning for each band.
Can I buy the German flag with the eagle on it?
Yes, that is our Germany crest flag. In Germany the eagle version is a federal service flag, but it is widely used by supporters and expats elsewhere.
What size Germany flag for a 20ft telescopic pole?
5ft x 3ft. The 3ft x 2ft looks lost on a 20ft pole and the 8ft x 5ft puts too much strain on it in a stiff breeze.
Which flag is the Bavarian one with the blue and white diamonds?
That is the Bavaria lozenge flag, sold in our German state flags range both plain and with the state crest. It is the flag you see on Oktoberfest tents.
Can I wash a printed polyester flag?
Yes. Use a cool hand or machine wash, no bleach, and let it dry naturally. Keep it away from tumble dryers and hot irons.
