The Gambia flag: the river through the middle

The flag of The Gambia has three horizontal bands of red, blue and green, with the blue band in the middle edged by two thin white stripes. The blue is the River Gambia, which runs the length of the country and around which its borders were drawn; red stands for the sun and the savanna, green for the forests and farmland, and the white lines for unity and peace. It was designed by Louis Thomasi and raised on 18 February 1965, when the colony became independent, and unusually for the time it has no link to any political party. With no emblem or lettering the Gambian flag is simple, and the white-edged blue band is what sets it apart from other tricolours. Our Gambia flag has the thin white stripes sharp and even on either side of the river band.

Independence Day, the Scorpions and the Smiling Coast

Independence Day on 18 February is celebrated with a march past in Banjul and flag-waving schoolchildren, and Tobaski and Koriteh, the Gambian names for Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr, are family occasions when the flag also appears. The Scorpions had their best moment at the Africa Cup of Nations held in Cameroon in early 2022, reaching the quarter-finals on their first appearance. For many Britons the Gambia is the Smiling Coast, a winter-sun destination around Kololi, Kotu and the Senegambia strip, and the country rejoined the Commonwealth in 2018. The UK’s Gambian community, in London, the Midlands and the North West, flies the flag at independence dinners, at twinning events between British and Gambian schools, at charity fundraisers and at AFCON screenings.

Sizes, grades and fittings

For a Gambia flag that only comes out for Independence Day or an AFCON match, Flagtex is the economical choice: printed woven polyester with eyelets, in 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft. For a Gambia flag left on a pole through wind and rain, DuraFlag is the heavier knitted fabric with double-stitched hems, in 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft on clips and 20x12in on rope and toggle. Put the 5ft x 3ft on a pole or a mosque fence for Independence Day, the 3ft x 2ft in a window or a school, the 8ft x 5ft on a stage or a big mast and the 20x12in on a car.

Gambia bunting

Gambia bunting is a string of rectangular pennants showing the red, blue and green bands with the white edging, sold in 3m and 9m lengths. A 3m run brightens a doorway, a classroom or a fundraising stall; a 9m run decorates a community hall, a marquee or a naming ceremony. Each Gambian pennant is printed on both faces and the polyester shrugs off a shower.

Hand flags and table flags

Gambia hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for Independence Day, school link visits and football screenings. The Gambia table flag is a 6x4in flag on a base for a desk, a charity office or a dinner table, and the large wooden Gambia table flag at 18x12in suits a high commission or a conference table. Senegal, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Guinea-Bissau and Nigeria flags are under world flags.
