The French Polynesia flag: a canoe under the sun
French Polynesia's flag has three horizontal bands, red, white and red, with the white twice as tall as each red. In the centre is the territory's emblem: a Polynesian sailing canoe carrying five figures, set against a golden sun above blue and white waves. The five figures stand for the five archipelagos, the Society Islands, the Tuamotus, the Marquesas, the Gambier Islands and the Austral Islands. Red and white have long been the colours of Tahiti. The flag was adopted in 1984 and is flown together with the French tricolour, since French Polynesia is an overseas collectivity of France.
