The Equatorial Guinea flag and the God tree
Equatorial Guinea's flag has three horizontal stripes of green, white and red, with a blue triangle at the hoist and the national coat of arms in the centre. Green stands for the country's forests and natural resources, white for peace, red for the fight for independence and blue for the sea that links the mainland to the islands. The arms show a silk cotton tree, the so-called God tree under which an early treaty with Spain is said to have been signed, beneath six gold stars for the mainland region of Río Muni and the five main islands. The scroll carries the motto Unidad, Paz, Justicia. Our Equatorial Guinea flag reproduces the arms at a readable size.
Independence Day and the Nzalang Nacional
Equatorial Guinea became independent from Spain on 12 October 1968 and is the only African country where Spanish is an official language. The capital, Malabo, is on the island of Bioko. The national football team, Nzalang Nacional, co-hosted the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations with Gabon and reached the semi-finals on home soil in 2015. In Britain the flag is flown by Equatoguinean families and Spanish-speaking African communities on 12 October.
