The flag of Timor-Leste
East Timor, officially Timor-Leste, flies a red flag with a yellow triangle at the hoist, overlaid by a smaller black triangle carrying a white five-pointed star. Yellow recalls the traces of colonialism, black the obscurantism that had to be overcome, red the struggle for national liberation, and the white star is the guiding light of peace. The design was first raised when independence was declared on 28 November 1975, days before the Indonesian invasion, and was flown again when full independence was restored on 20 May 2002, after the UN-organised referendum of 1999. Our East Timor flag has the two triangles in the correct proportions against the red.
Restoration Day and the Timorese in the UK
Timor-Leste marks 20 May as Restoration of Independence Day and 28 November as Proclamation of Independence Day. Because many Timorese can hold Portuguese passports, a good number came to Britain to work, and sizeable communities grew up in Northern Ireland and parts of England. The flag comes out for both national days, church festivals and football.
