The Dannebrog: the oldest flag still flying

The Denmark flag is a white Scandinavian cross on red, the cross set towards the hoist so the arm nearest the pole is shorter than the one flying free. Danes call it the Dannebrog, the cloth of the Danes, and the legend is that it fell from the sky to King Valdemar II at the Battle of Lyndanisse in Estonia on 15 June 1219, turning the battle. The design is recorded in use by the Danish kings from at least the fourteenth century, which makes it the oldest continuously used national flag in the world and the model for every other Nordic cross flag, from Sweden and Norway to Iceland, Finland and the Faroes. The civil flag is 28:37 in proportion; ours keeps that off-centre cross with the white at its proper width, printed right through, on a red that stays red after a season outdoors.

Birthdays, Christmas and 5 June

No other country flies its flag the way Denmark does. The Dannebrog goes up outside the house for a birthday, sits on the breakfast table in a little stand, hangs on paper strings around the Christmas tree and is waved at the airport when someone comes home; a flag in the garden simply means somebody in the house is celebrating. In the UK that habit carries on through the Danish Church in London, Danish schools and playgroups, the YWCA and seamen’s missions, hygge-themed cafes and the Danish bakeries that have spread from Copenhagen. The civic dates are Valdemarsdag on 15 June, Constitution Day, Grundlovsdag, on 5 June and the Queen’s and King’s birthdays, and the sporting ones are the handball world championships, Euros and World Cup football, cycling’s Tour de France when it starts in Denmark and the badminton All England in Birmingham, where Danish fans are the loudest in the hall.

Christiania and the Nordic family

The Christiania (Freetown) flag, three yellow dots on red for the three i’s in the name of Copenhagen’s self-governing district, is the alternative Danish flag for a music venue, a skate park or a festival tent, and comes with its own bunting, hand flag and table flag. The other Nordic cross flags, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland, each have their own hub.

Sizes, grades and fittings

The Denmark flag is stocked in 20x12in for a hand pole or a desk, 3ft x 2ft for a bedroom wall or a short pole, 5ft x 3ft for a garden pole or a hall, and 8ft x 5ft for a church forecourt or a tall fixed pole. Flagtex is the printed woven-polyester grade for birthdays and tournaments; Flagtex Nylon is the lighter cloth that lifts in a soft breeze; DuraFlag is the heavy knitted grade with double-stitched hems for the pole that flies the Dannebrog every day. Eyelets are standard, with clips or a rope and toggle on the DuraFlag for a halyard pole.

Denmark bunting

Denmark bunting repeats the Dannebrog on each pennant in 3m, 5m, 9m and 20m lengths, in a rectangle cut that shows the whole flag or a triangle cut for a birthday-party look, sewn to a strong tape. A 3m length goes round a birthday table or a bakery counter, 9m lines a church hall or a classroom for a Denmark day, and 20m dresses a Christmas market stall or a handball fan zone. It is weatherproof polyester, so it goes back in the drawer for next year’s birthday.

Hand flags and table flags

Denmark hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in, the flags for the airport welcome, the school parade and the handball terrace. The Denmark table flag with base is the 6x4in flag for the birthday breakfast table, a restaurant counter or a conference desk, with the large wooden table flag at 18x12in for a reception and the satin table flag on a chrome base for an office or an embassy-style dinner.

Danish flag FAQs

Why is the Danish flag the oldest in the world?

The white cross on red has been used by Danish kings since at least the 1300s and has never been replaced, which makes it the oldest national flag in continuous use. Legend dates it to 15 June 1219, when it is said to have fallen from the sky during a battle in Estonia.

What does Dannebrog mean?

It means the cloth or banner of the Danes, from the Old Danish for Danish cloth. The name has been used for the flag since the Middle Ages.

Why is the cross off-centre on the Danish flag?

All Nordic cross flags set the vertical arm towards the hoist. It was originally a practical shape for a swallow-tailed banner and became the pattern that Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland all copied.

Why do Danes fly the flag for birthdays?

Because in Denmark the flag is a sign of celebration as much as of the state. It is flown outside the house, put on the breakfast table and even stuck into the birthday cake, a custom Danish families keep up when they live abroad.

What size Denmark flag for a garden flagpole?

5ft x 3ft on a pole up to 6m, 3ft x 2ft on a shorter pole. Choose DuraFlag if the flag will stay up all year and Flagtex if it comes out for birthdays and matches.

Do you sell the Christiania flag?

Yes, the red flag with three yellow dots of Freetown Christiania is on this page as a full-size flag, bunting, hand flag and table flag.
