The Cyprus flag: an island in copper on white

The Cyprus flag is a white field with a silhouette of the island in copper-orange above two crossed olive branches in green. It was adopted on 16 August 1960, the day the Republic of Cyprus came into being, and was chosen through a competition won by İsmet Güney, a Turkish Cypriot art teacher. The brief was a flag that leaned on neither Greece nor Turkey, so it uses neither blue nor red and carries no cross or crescent; the copper colour is for the metal that gave the island its name, and the olive branches are for peace between the two communities. It is one of only a handful of national flags to show a map of the country. Our Cyprus flag follows the 2006 specification with the slightly darker copper and the olive branches in the proportions now used by the Republic.

The flag used in the north

The Cyprus North flag, a white field with a red crescent and star between two red horizontal stripes, has been used in the Turkish Cypriot north of the island since 1984. It is stocked in the same four sizes with its own bunting and table flag for the Turkish Cypriot community in Haringey, Enfield, Hackney and Birmingham. Both flags are stocked as they are used; no view on the island’s politics is implied by either.

Independence Day, the Wine Festival and Cypriots in Britain

Britain has the largest Cypriot population outside the island, centred on Palmers Green, Wood Green, Southgate and Enfield in north London, with communities in Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds. Independence Day on 1 October and Greek Independence Day on 25 March bring flags out at churches, community centres and the Cypriot schools; the Cypriot Wine Festival and Cultural Fair at Alexandra Palace in June is the biggest gathering of the year; and christenings, weddings, name days and the Easter lamb bring Cyprus bunting into halls and gardens. On the sport side it is the Cyprus national team, APOEL and Omonia in Europe, and the Greece flag or the Turkey flag alongside, depending on the family.

Sizes, grades and fittings

5ft x 3ft is the size for a taverna front, a garden pole or a hall; 3ft x 2ft for a bedroom, a stall or a short pole; 8ft x 5ft for a church flagpole, a community centre or a stage; 20x12in for a car or a hand pole. Flagtex is the printed woven polyester at £6.99 for a 5ft x 3ft; DuraFlag is the 150gsm knitted grade with double-stitched hems, clips or rope and toggle for a flag that flies all year. Both grades are stocked in and dispatched from our Stoke-on-Trent warehouse and go out the same working day on orders before 2pm.

Cyprus bunting

Cyprus bunting carries the island flag on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths, on weatherproof polyester sewn to a strong tape. A 3m length dresses a doorway or a sweet table; 9m runs the length of a hall or a taverna frontage for a christening or Independence Day.

Hand flags and table flags

Cyprus hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for the parade and the stadium. The Cyprus table flag with base is the 6x4in desk flag for a restaurant counter, a high commission or a wedding table, with a wooden table flag and a satin table flag on a chrome base. The north flag has a satin table flag too. Malta, Lebanon and the rest of the eastern Mediterranean are under world flags.

Cyprus flag FAQs

Why is the map on the Cyprus flag orange?

It is copper, the metal the island was famous for in antiquity and from which the name Cyprus is thought to derive. The two olive branches below it stand for peace between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities.

Who designed the Cypriot flag?

İsmet Güney, a Turkish Cypriot art teacher, won the 1960 competition. The rules required a neutral design with no blue, red, cross or crescent.

What is the Cyprus North flag?

The white flag with a red crescent and star between two red stripes used in the north of the island since 1984. We stock it in the same sizes as the Republic’s flag, with bunting and a table flag.

When is Cyprus Independence Day?

1 October. Independence was granted on 16 August 1960, but the holiday was moved to 1 October in 1963 and has stayed there.

What size Cyprus flag for a telescopic pole?

5ft x 3ft on a 6m telescopic or garden pole; 8ft x 5ft only on a fixed pole of 25ft or more; 3ft x 2ft on a short pole or a hand pole.

Can I get Cyprus bunting longer than 9m?

Not in a single length. Two or three 9m lengths join end to end for a street or a church front, and the Greece and Turkey bunting pages have longer runs if you want to mix flags.
