Four islands on one flag
The Comoros flag has four horizontal stripes of yellow, white, red and blue, with a green triangle at the hoist holding a white crescent and four white stars. Each stripe and each star stands for one of the four islands of the archipelago: Mwali (Mohéli), Mayotte, Nzwani (Anjouan) and Ngazidja (Grande Comore). Mayotte voted to remain with France and is administered as a French department, but it is still represented on the flag. The green triangle and crescent reflect Islam, the faith of most Comorians. The present design has been in use since the early 2000s. Our Comoros flag shows the stars and stripes in the correct order from top to bottom.
Independence, football and the diaspora
The Comoros declared independence from France on 6 July 1975. The islands are known for ylang-ylang and vanilla, and for the coelacanth, the "living fossil" fish found in their waters. That fish gave the national football team its nickname, and the Coelacanths caused a stir at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations by beating Ghana and reaching the last 16. The largest Comorian community abroad is in Marseille, and Comorians in Britain fly the flag for 6 July and family weddings.
Sizes, grades and fittings
Comoros flags come in 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft from £6.99. With four stars and four stripes, the 3ft x 2ft and larger show the detail best. The Flagtex cloth is lightweight and printed for value; the DuraFlag cloth is heavier, knitted and edged with tough stitching, with eyelets, clips or rope and toggle to choose from.
Comoros bunting
Comoros bunting hangs the striped flag on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths, ideal for a wedding marquee or a match-day lounge.
Hand flags and table flags
Comoros hand flags come in 9x6in and 18x12in on wooden sticks. The Comoros table flag is 6x4in with base, and the large wooden table flag is 18x12in. Madagascar, Mauritius and France are among our world flags.
