The Colombian flag: yellow, blue and red
The Colombia flag is three horizontal bands of yellow, blue and red, with the yellow taking the top half and the blue and red a quarter each. The colours go back to the banner Francisco de Miranda raised in 1806 at the start of the fight against Spanish rule, and they were carried by Bolívar’s Gran Colombia before Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador went their separate ways; the double-width yellow stripe was fixed by decree in 1861. Yellow is explained as the gold and the wealth of the land, blue as the two oceans on Colombia’s coasts and the sky, and red as the blood of those who won independence. Our Colombia flag keeps the 2:1:1 proportions exactly, so the yellow reads as the dominant band rather than an even tricolour, which is the mistake you see on cheap imports.
20 July, carnival and Los Cafeteros
Colombian Independence Day on 20 July is the flag day in the UK, with festivals in Southwark and Haringey, a street party on the South Bank most years and Colombian restaurants, bakeries and hairdressers in Elephant and Castle, Seven Sisters and Brixton dressing their fronts in yellow, blue and red. The Battle of Boyacá on 7 August is a second national holiday, and Barranquilla carnival in February or March brings the flag out again for salsa and cumbia nights in London, Manchester and Birmingham. On the sport side Los Cafeteros fill pubs for every Copa América and World Cup qualifier, with the World Cup 2026 Colombia team bundle putting a flag, bunting and hand flags together for the tournament, and Colombian cycling fans wave the flag on every Tour de France climb and at the Olympic velodrome. Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela and the rest of the continent are in world flags.
Which size and which grade
Choose 20x12in for a car window or a hand pole, 3ft x 2ft for a bedroom wall, a bar or a market stall, 5ft x 3ft for a garden pole, a pub front or a carnival float, and 8ft x 5ft for a restaurant frontage, a stage backdrop or a flagpole. The Flagtex grade is woven polyester with brass eyelets for parties, parades and tournament summers. DuraFlag is the knitted-polyester grade with double-stitched hems for a flag that stays up outside a club or a café through the year, with clips or a rope and toggle to match your pole.
Colombia bunting
Colombia bunting puts the tricolour on every rectangular pennant, sewn to a tape in 3m and 9m lengths. Three metres dresses a doorway or a bar back, nine metres runs down a restaurant, across a church hall for a 20 July fiesta or along a stall at a Latin American festival, and lengths tie together for a street.
Hand flags and table flags
Colombia hand flags on wooden sticks in 9x6in and 18x12in are what the crowd waves at the football and in the Independence Day parade. The Colombia table flag with base is the 6x4in desk flag for a consulate, a classroom or a restaurant counter, the wooden table flag and large wooden table flag suit a dinner or an exhibition stand, and the satin table flag is the sleeved version for a chrome base.
Colombian flag FAQs
Why is the yellow stripe on the Colombian flag bigger?
The 1861 decree fixed the yellow at half the flag’s height with blue and red a quarter each. The yellow stands for the gold and riches of the land, the blue for the seas and sky, and the red for the blood of independence.
What is the difference between the Colombian, Ecuadorian and Venezuelan flags?
All three come from the Gran Colombia tricolour. Ecuador keeps the double-width yellow but adds its coat of arms; Venezuela uses three equal bands with an arc of stars. The plain 2:1:1 tricolour with no emblem is Colombia.
When is Colombian Independence Day?
20 July, with a second holiday on 7 August for the Battle of Boyacá. UK celebrations cluster around the weekend closest to 20 July.
Which size Colombia flag for a pub during the World Cup?
5ft x 3ft is the standard for a wall, a window or a bar front; 8ft x 5ft for a frontage or a big screen backdrop. The team bundle adds bunting and hand flags.
Can I get Colombia bunting longer than 9m?
The bunting comes in 3m and 9m lengths; tie several together for a longer run down a street or across a hall.
Are the table flags supplied with a base?
The 6x4in table flag comes with its base, the wooden table flags come on a wooden stand, and the satin table flag is sleeved for a chrome stand.
