The Chilean flag: the Lone Star

Chile’s flag, La Estrella Solitaria, has a white band over a red band, with a blue square in the upper hoist corner holding a single white five-pointed star. Blue is the sky and the Pacific, white the snow of the Andes, and red the blood of those who fought for independence; the star is read as a guide to progress and honour, and also recalls the star emblem of the Mapuche. The design was adopted on 18 October 1817, in the middle of the war of independence, and is usually credited to the minister José Ignacio Zenteno with the Spanish officer Antonio Arcos; it was first flown at the proclamation of independence in February 1818. It resembles the flag of Texas, which came later, but the Chilean canton is a square confined to the upper band, where the Texan blue runs the full height. Our Chile flag is made with the canton correctly square and the star centred within it.

Fiestas Patrias, La Roja and Rapa Nui

The Fiestas Patrias on 18 and 19 September, the Dieciocho, are the big flag days: by law every home in Chile flies the flag, the fondas open with empanadas, chicha and cueca dancing, and the Chilean community in London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Bristol holds its own fondas, asados and embassy receptions in the same week. Football brings the flag to the UK too, for La Roja, the Copa América winners of 2015 and 2016, and for Chilean players in the English leagues, and it turns out for the rodeo season, for the Chilean Navy’s Esmeralda when the tall ship visits a British port, and for Chile Day events in the City. Alongside the national flag we stock the Easter Island flag, white with the red reimiro, the crescent-shaped pectoral ornament of the Rapa Nui, in 5ft x 3ft.

Picking a Chile flag size

Take a 5ft x 3ft for a pole, a fonda entrance or a bar wall; a 3ft x 2ft for a window, a desk wall or a short pole; an 8ft x 5ft for a hall or a large fixed pole; and a 20x12in for a car or a hand pole. Flagtex is the lighter printed polyester for indoor use and short outdoor spells, and DuraFlag the knitted heavyweight with double-stitched edges for a flag left on a pole through the season. Sewn headers and brass eyelets are standard; clips and rope-and-toggle fittings are offered on the DuraFlag.

Chile bunting

Chile bunting is a string of rectangular pennants printed with the Lone Star flag, on a tape in 3m and 9m lengths. A 3m length dresses a doorway or the serving table at an asado; a 9m length runs the length of a fonda, a marquee or a hall for the Dieciocho. The pennants are polyester, printed on both faces, and can stay out in a September shower.

Hand flags and table flags

Chile hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for football crowds, parades and school Fiestas Patrias. The Chile table flag is 6x4in on a base for an office or a restaurant table, and the large wooden table flag at 18x12in suits an embassy or an event desk. Argentina, Peru, Bolivia and Colombia flags are under world flags.

Chilean flag FAQs

What does the star on the Chilean flag mean?

The single white star is a guide on the path of progress and honour; it also echoes the eight-pointed star of the Mapuche, the indigenous people of central Chile.

What is the difference between the Chile flag and the Texas flag?

Chile’s blue canton is a square in the top corner, with white beside it and red below; the Texas flag has a blue stripe the full height of the hoist with white over red beside it.

When was the Chilean flag adopted?

18 October 1817, during the war of independence, replacing the earlier blue, white and yellow tricolour of the Patria Vieja.

When are the Fiestas Patrias?

18 September, marking the first government junta of 1810, and 19 September, the Day of the Glories of the Army; Chilean law requires the flag to be flown on both.

Do you sell the Easter Island flag?

Yes, the Rapa Nui flag, white with a red reimiro, is stocked in 5ft x 3ft with eyelets.

Which Chile flag size for a fonda?

8ft x 5ft for the back of the stage, 5ft x 3ft on poles at the entrance and 9m bunting along the tables.

How quickly can Chile flags be delivered?

All sizes and formats on this page are stocked in and dispatched from our Stoke-on-Trent warehouse; order by 2pm for same-day dispatch and free 1–2 day delivery across the UK.
