The Chad flag and its famous twin
Chad's flag is a vertical tricolour of blue, gold and red, adopted in 1959 shortly before independence. Blue stands for the sky and the hope of the people, gold for the sun and the desert north, and red for progress and the sacrifices made for the nation. The colours combine those of France with the pan-African palette. Chad's flag is almost identical to the flag of Romania; the only official difference is that Chad's blue is a little darker, and the likeness is a favourite flag-quiz question. Our Chad flag has three equal vertical bands, with blue at the hoist.
Independence Day, Lake Chad and the Sahara
Chad became independent from France on 11 August 1960. The country stretches from the Sahara and the Tibesti mountains in the north to savannah in the south, and Lake Chad, shared with Niger, Nigeria and Cameroon, gives the nation its name. The Ennedi plateau, with its sandstone arches and rock art, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In Britain the flag is flown by Chadian students, aid workers and families for 11 August and for football.
Sizes, grades and fittings
Chad flags are stocked in 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft from £6.99. Because the design is simple, even the 20x12in reads clearly. Pick Flagtex for an affordable lightweight print or DuraFlag for a dense knitted fabric that copes with long outdoor use, ordered with eyelets, clips or rope and toggle.
Chad bunting
Chad bunting sets the blue, gold and red bands on rectangular flags in 3m and 9m runs for an independence party or an international evening.
Hand flags and table flags
Chad hand flags are on wooden sticks in 9x6in and 18x12in. The 6x4in Chad table flag comes with a base, and the 18x12in large wooden table flag suits a desk. Romania, Niger and the Central African Republic are also in our world flags.
