Canada flags: the Maple Leaf

The Canadian flag is a red field with a white square at its centre and an eleven-pointed red maple leaf inside it, in a 1:2 proportion; the white square is a “Canadian pale” exactly half the flag’s length. George Stanley’s design was chosen after months of parliamentary argument in 1964 and proclaimed by Queen Elizabeth II on 15 February 1965, a date now kept as National Flag of Canada Day. The eleven points carry no official meaning; they were simply the number that stayed crisp when the leaf was tested in a wind tunnel. Our Canada flag uses the single bright red the Canadian government specifies rather than the darker crimson of cheaper flags, with the leaf stem pointing to the bottom edge.

The flag it replaced, the Canadian Red Ensign with the Union Jack and the shield of Canada, was the flag Canadian forces carried through the Second World War, and we stock it as the Canadian WWII flag for Remembrance parades, re-enactors and veterans’ associations. The Canadian Royal Standard completes the historic set.

Canada Day, Remembrance and the hockey

Canada Day on 1 July fills Trafalgar Square and every Canadian bar from Covent Garden to Glasgow with red and white, and it is the day the bunting and hand flags go out. Remembrance Sunday follows for the Canadian regiments commemorated at the Canada Memorial in Green Park and in war cemeteries across Britain; through the winter the NHL season, the World Juniors over Christmas and the UK’s ice-hockey and curling clubs keep a Canada flag on the wall, and Canadian societies at the universities and October Thanksgiving dinners fill in the rest.

Sizes for poles, bars and parades

5ft x 3ft is the Canada flag for a wall bracket, a bar window or a 20ft telescopic pole, and the size most expats buy. 3ft x 2ft suits an apartment balcony or a classroom display, while 8ft x 5ft is for a school or club flagpole and for the stage at a Canada Day party. All are finished with a sewn header and eyelets; the DuraFlag grade adds rope and toggle or clips.

Flagtex and DuraFlag grades

Our standard Flagtex Canada flag is printed through woven polyester so the leaf shows correctly from both sides, and it costs little enough to buy one for each room of a Canadian bar. The Canada DuraFlag is for a flag that flies every day — high commissions, schools, hotels and the Canadian clubs that keep a pole — made from 150gsm knitted polyester with double-stitched hems, a reinforced header and UV-fast inks in 3x2, 5x3 and 8x5ft, plus a courtesy size for a yacht.

Canada bunting

Canada bunting repeats the Maple Leaf flag on every pennant, printed on weatherproof polyester and sewn to a strong tape in rectangle or triangle cut, so it can hang along a street party, across a sports bar or around a Canadian Thanksgiving table and be packed away for next year. Nunavut bunting is the regional option.

Hand flags, table flags and windsocks

Canada hand flags on wooden sticks come singly or in packs for parade routes, citizenship ceremonies and school Canada days. The Canada table flag with base suits a reception desk, a Canadian restaurant or a visa office, the satin Canada table flag on a chrome base dresses a boardroom, and the Canada windsock flies from a garden or campsite pole.

Canadian province and territory flags

The Canadian province flags range covers all ten provinces and three territories: the blue-and-white Fleurdelisé of Quebec, Ontario’s Red Ensign with the provincial shield, the Nova Scotia saltire, British Columbia’s setting sun, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, Yukon, the Northwest Territories and the inuksuk flag of Nunavut, with Montreal and the Labrador flag for good measure. The United States, Mexico and the Caribbean are listed under world flags.

Canadian flag FAQs

What does the Canadian flag look like?

Two red vertical bars either side of a white square, with a red eleven-pointed maple leaf in the middle. The white square is twice the width of each red bar and the flag is twice as long as it is high.

What does the maple leaf on the Canadian flag mean?

The maple leaf had been a Canadian emblem since the 1830s and was worn on the badges of Canadian soldiers in both world wars. Red and white were declared Canada’s national colours by George V in 1921.

When was the Canadian flag adopted?

It was proclaimed on 15 February 1965, replacing the Canadian Red Ensign after the “Great Flag Debate” of 1964.

Which way up does the Canadian flag go?

Stem of the leaf at the bottom. The design is symmetrical left to right, so there is no wrong way round, only upside down.

What size Canada flag for a 20ft telescopic pole?

5ft x 3ft. Go to 8ft x 5ft only on a fixed pole of 25ft or more, where the extra drag is safe.

Do you sell the old Canadian Red Ensign?

Yes, listed as the Canadian WWII flag, with the Union Jack in the canton and the Canadian shield in the fly, in 5ft x 3ft, 8ft x 5ft and DuraFlag.

Can I buy Quebec, Ontario or other province flags?

Yes. Every province and territory is in the Canadian province flags range, most in 5ft x 3ft with several available as satin table flags.
