The Cameroon flag: pan-African colours and a star of unity

Cameroon flies a vertical tricolour of green, red and yellow with a five-pointed gold star in the centre of the red band. The pan-African colours were taken up at independence in 1960, when the flag was a plain tricolour; two gold stars were added to the green band in 1961 to represent the federation of the former French and British Cameroons, and on 20 May 1975, after the federation became a unitary state, the two were replaced by the single central star of unity. Green is the forests of the south, yellow the savannah and the sun of the north, and red the link between them and the blood shed for independence. Our Cameroon flag has the three bands in equal width and the star printed in gold on the red, sized to the official proportion.

National Day and the Indomitable Lions

National Day on 20 May commemorates the 1972 referendum that created the unitary state and brings a military and civilian parade along the Boulevard du 20 Mai in Yaoundé, with the flag on every lamp post; Youth Day on 11 February is a second flag occasion for schools. For most people, though, the flag means football: the Indomitable Lions won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1984, 1988, 2000, 2002 and 2017, took Olympic gold in Sydney in 2000 and, with Roger Milla dancing at the corner flag, became the first African side to reach a World Cup quarter-final in Italy in 1990, where they were edged out by England. Samuel Eto’o, Rigobert Song and Vincent Aboubakar carried the colours since, and the Lionesses have reached the Women’s World Cup. Cameroon has been a Commonwealth member since 1995, and its community in London, with associations in Lewisham, Croydon and Manchester, gathers for 20 May receptions, AFCON screenings and cultural nights where the flag is worn as much as flown.

Sizes, grades and fittings

Fly a 5ft x 3ft on a flagpole, in a bar or on a club wall; a 3ft x 2ft in a window, an office or on a stall; an 8ft x 5ft on a large mast or as a stage backdrop; and a 20x12in on a car or a hand pole. Flagtex is the printed woven polyester for indoor displays and short-term outdoor use, while DuraFlag is the knitted heavyweight with double-stitched hems built to stay out through a season. Both grades have a sewn header and two brass eyelets; clips or rope and toggle are offered on the DuraFlag.

Cameroon bunting

Cameroon bunting is a string of rectangular pennants in the green, red and yellow with the star, in 3m and 9m lengths. One 3m run dresses a doorway or a buffet for 20 May; a 9m run goes the length of a bar, a hall or a marquee for a tournament. The pennants are double-sided polyester that does not mind a downpour.

Hand flags and table flags

Cameroon hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for football crowds, parades and school Commonwealth days. The Cameroon table flag is a 6x4in flag on a base for an office or a restaurant table, and the large wooden table flag at 18x12in suits a high commission desk or a conference room. Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Ivory Coast and the Democratic Republic of the Congo flags are under world flags.

Cameroon flag FAQs

What do the colours of the Cameroon flag represent?

Green for the forests of the south, yellow for the savannah and sunshine of the north, and red for unity and the blood of independence. They are the pan-African colours.

Why does the Cameroon flag have one star?

The single star of unity replaced two stars in 1975 after the federation of the French and British Cameroons became a single unitary state.

When is Cameroon National Day?

20 May, the anniversary of the 1972 referendum that created the United Republic of Cameroon, celebrated with a parade in Yaoundé.

Is the Cameroon flag the same as the Senegal flag?

No. Senegal runs green, yellow, red with a green star on the yellow; Cameroon runs green, red, yellow with a gold star on the red.

Which size Cameroon flag for an AFCON screening?

A 5ft x 3ft on the wall or held up in the crowd, a 9m run of bunting along the bar and 9x6in hand flags for the table.

Is the star printed on both sides?

Yes. The flag is printed through the polyester so the star shows on the reverse, mirrored, in both Flagtex and DuraFlag.
