Brazil flags: 27 stars, a night sky and Ordem e Progresso

The Brazilian flag is a green field carrying a yellow rhombus, and inside that a blue globe crossed by a white band lettered ORDEM E PROGRESSO, in a 7:10 proportion. It was adopted on 19 November 1889, four days after the army deposed Emperor Pedro II and proclaimed the republic, and it kept the green and yellow of the imperial banner: green for the House of Braganza and yellow for the Habsburg family of Pedro I’s empress, though most Brazilians now take them to mean the forests and the gold. The blue disc maps the sky over Rio de Janeiro on the morning of 15 November 1889, one star for each state and the Federal District, and the count was raised to 27 in May 1992 when the newest states were added. The motto is borrowed from Auguste Comte’s positivism, which the republic’s founders admired.

Our Brazil flag is printed with the constellations in their correct positions, including the Southern Cross above the band and the lone star for Pará just over it, so that the brazil flag meaning questions below can be answered by looking at the cloth itself.

When the Brazilian flag is flown

Carnival, in the run-up to Lent each February or March, is when Brazilian restaurants, dance schools and samba bands in Britain decorate; Independence Day on 7 September and Proclamation of the Republic Day on 15 November follow in the autumn. Every Seleção match turns the yellow shirt into a street uniform, and the Copa América, the World Cup qualifiers and the Olympic football all keep the flag busy between tournaments. London’s Brazilian Day festival and churrascarias everywhere account for most of our bulk orders.

Sizes and uses

The 5ft x 3ft Brazil flag is the one for garden telescopic poles, balcony rails and restaurant doorways, and it is what the capoeira groups buy by the half-dozen. 3ft x 2ft is sized for a classroom, a bedroom or a short pole on a stall, and 8ft x 5ft is the full-size commercial flag for fixed poles, stages and sports-bar walls. Metal eyelets are standard, with rope and toggle or clips on the sewn grades.

Three grades of Brazil flag

Flagtex is the budget printed polyester for a one-off party or tournament. Flagtex Nylon, offered in 5ft x 3ft, is denser, holds its colour longer and has a quadruple-stitched fly end for regular use. The DuraFlag Brazil flag is the permanent-pole grade in 150gsm knitted polyester with double-stitched hems, UV-stable inks and a clip or rope-and-toggle hoist, and it comes in a courtesy size for boats and desks too.

Brazil bunting

Brazil bunting carries the full flag on every rectangular pennant, printed on weatherproof polyester and sewn to a tape that can be stapled, tied or cable-tied in place. The short length dresses a shop counter or a classroom; the long length runs a restaurant terrace or a garden for a Carnival party.

Hand flags and table flags

Brazil hand flags on wooden sticks are what the crowd waves at a samba parade or a fan-park screening, with a 30cm size for children and a 60cm size for adults. The Brazil table flag with base is for a reception desk, a Portuguese-language classroom or a conference table, and the Brazil team bundle puts a supporter kit together in one order.

South American flags

Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Uruguay, Peru and Portugal are all in the world flags range, and any of them can be ordered in permanent grade from world country DuraFlags.

Brazil flag FAQs

What does the Brazilian flag mean?

Green and yellow were the colours of the imperial dynasties, now read as forest and gold; the blue globe shows the night sky over Rio on 15 November 1889, with one star per state; and Ordem e Progresso, order and progress, is a positivist motto.

How many stars are on the Brazil flag?

27, one for each of the 26 states and one for the Federal District. The flag had 21 stars from 1889 and reached 27 in 1992.

Which way up is the Brazilian flag?

The white band curves upwards from left to right like a smile, and the lettering reads ORDEM E PROGRESSO left to right. If the band droops the flag is upside down.

What size Brazil flag should I buy for a party?

3ft x 2ft for a wall or a window, 5ft x 3ft for a garden pole or a doorway, and bunting rather than a flag if you want colour along a whole room.

Is the Brazil flag the same colour as Jamaica’s?

No. Jamaica’s flag is a gold saltire on green and black with no blue, while Brazil’s is a yellow diamond with a blue globe on green. They are easy to mix up at a distance, so check the emblem.

Do you make a Brazil flag for a boat or an office desk?

Yes. The DuraFlag courtesy size with rope and toggle suits a yacht or a small pole, and the Brazil table flag with base covers desks and counters.
