The Bermuda flag: a red ensign with the Sea Venture
Bermuda is the one British Overseas Territory whose flag is a red ensign rather than a blue one: a red field, the Union Jack in the canton and the shield of the Bermuda coat of arms in the fly. The shield shows a red lion holding up a smaller shield on which the Sea Venture founders on the reef in 1609, the wreck that brought the first settlers to the islands on their way to Virginia, and the arms were granted in 1910 when the red ensign was authorised for use on land. The red ground is unusual because the islands used the Red Ensign of merchant shipping long before the practice was formalised, and it has been kept ever since. A blue ensign with the same arms is reserved for government vessels. Our Bermuda flag is the red land flag with the full-colour shield, the lion and the wreck clearly drawn even on the 20x12in size.
Bermuda Day, Cup Match and the sailing
Bermuda Day at the end of May opens the summer, with the Bermuda Day parade along Front Street in Hamilton, the half-marathon and the first swim of the year, and the flag is out again for Cup Match at the end of July, the two-day cricket holiday between Somerset and St George’s that doubles as Emancipation Day and Mary Prince Day. The Gombey dancers, in their tall masks and peacock-feathered hats, appear at both and at Christmas. Sailing is the other obsession: the island hosted the 2017 America’s Cup in the Great Sound, the Newport Bermuda race arrives every two years and the Bermuda Gold Cup match-racing is held off Hamilton. In the UK the flag is flown by Bermudian students and families, at Bermuda Society events in London and by the many British families with island connections; Bermuda also sends a team to the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics, where Flora Duffy won triathlon gold in Tokyo.
Choosing a size and grade
Fly a 5ft x 3ft from a house pole, a boat club or a school hall; a 3ft x 2ft in a window, an office or on a market stall; an 8ft x 5ft on a large fixed mast or as a photo backdrop; and a 20x12in on a car, a bicycle or a hand pole. Flagtex is the printed woven polyester for indoor displays and a few weeks outside, and DuraFlag the heavier knitted polyester with double-stitched hems for a flag that lives on a pole through the year. Both finish with a sewn header and brass eyelets, and the DuraFlag can be ordered with clips or with rope and toggle for a yacht or a club flagstaff.
Bermuda bunting
Bermuda bunting repeats the red ensign on rectangular pennants sewn to a tape, in 3m and 9m lengths. Three metres frames a doorway or a sideboard for a Cup Match party; nine metres runs along a garden fence, a marquee or a sailing club bar. The polyester pennants are printed on both sides and are happy outside in a shower.
Hand flags and table flags
Bermuda hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for the Bermuda Day parade, the cricket and the quayside when the yachts come in. The Bermuda table flag is a 6x4in flag with a base for an office or a reinsurance desk, and the large wooden table flag at 18x12in suits a reception or a boardroom. The Cayman Islands, Turks and Caicos, Gibraltar, the Falkland Islands and the other British territories are under world flags.
Bermuda flag FAQs
Why is the Bermuda flag red when other British territories use blue?
Bermuda used the Red Ensign of merchant shipping on land from the nineteenth century and the practice was made official with the coat of arms in 1910. A blue version exists for government ships.
What is the ship on the Bermuda flag?
The Sea Venture, the English ship wrecked on the Bermuda reefs in 1609 on its way to Jamestown; its survivors were the first settlers of the islands.
When is Bermuda Day?
Late May, on the Friday before the last Monday of the month, with a parade in Hamilton. Cup Match follows at the end of July.
Is Bermuda in the Caribbean?
No. Bermuda sits in the North Atlantic about 650 miles east of North Carolina, though it is often grouped with the Caribbean territories in sport and at the Commonwealth Games.
Which size Bermuda flag for a yacht?
A 20x12in on a small boat or a 5ft x 3ft on a larger mast, in DuraFlag with rope and toggle so it stands up to salt spray.
Is the coat of arms printed on both sides?
Yes. The design is printed through the fabric, so the shield and lion show on the reverse as a mirror image on both Flagtex and DuraFlag.
How quickly do Bermuda flags ship?
Everything here is stocked in and dispatched from our Stoke-on-Trent warehouse; orders before 2pm leave the same day and arrive in 1–2 working days anywhere in the UK.
