The Belize flag: woodcutters, a mahogany tree and 50 leaves
The flag of Belize is royal blue with a narrow red stripe along the top and bottom edges and a white disc in the centre holding the national coat of arms. The arms show two woodcutters, one with an axe and one with a paddle, either side of a shield with woodcutting tools and a sailing ship, under a mahogany tree, with the motto Sub Umbra Floreo, I flourish in the shade, all inside a ring of 50 leaves recalling 1950, when the independence movement began. The blue came from the People’s United Party and the red stripes from the United Democratic Party, added at independence in 1981 so that the flag would belong to everyone. Belize is one of very few countries whose national flag shows human figures, and with twelve colours it is among the most detailed flags in the world. Our Belize flag reproduces the full-colour arms inside the white disc.
The September Celebrations, Garifuna Settlement Day and BATSUB
The September Celebrations run through the month, with St George’s Caye Day on 10 September recalling the battle of 1798, Independence Day on 21 September and carnival parades in Belize City; Garifuna Settlement Day on 19 November marks the arrival of the Garifuna people in 1832. The connection with Britain is unusual: the British Army has trained in the Belizean jungle for decades, and British Army Training Support Unit Belize still runs jungle courses there, so many soldiers and veterans keep a Belizean flag from their time in the country. The UK’s Belizean community, many of them Creole and Garifuna families who came in the Windrush years, gathers in London for independence dances, church services and September events, and divers who know the Barrier Reef and the Great Blue Hole fly the flag too.
Sizes, grades and fittings
Every Belize flag size comes in DuraFlag, the knitted heavyweight polyester with double-stitched hems: 20x12in with rope and toggle, and 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft with clips. The lighter Flagtex grade, printed woven polyester with eyelets for indoor and occasional outdoor use, covers the Belize flag in 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft. The 5ft x 3ft suits a flagpole, a church hall or a regimental reunion, the 3ft x 2ft a window or a dive shop, the 8ft x 5ft a carnival float or a big mast and the 20x12in a car or a boat.
Belize bunting
Belize bunting is a string of rectangular pennants showing the royal blue field, red edges and the white disc of arms, sold in 3m and 9m lengths. Use 3m for a front door, a classroom or a food stall at a September celebration, and 9m along a hall, a marquee or a carnival float. Each Belizean pennant is printed on both faces and the polyester shrugs off a shower.
Hand flags and table flags
Belize hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for September parades, school days and independence events. The Belize table flag is a 6x4in flag on a base for a desk, a travel company counter or a celebration table, and the large wooden Belize table flag at 18x12in suits a reception or a reunion top table. Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico and the Bahamas flags are under world flags.
