The Belgian flag: black, yellow and red
The Belgium flag is a vertical tricolour of black, yellow and red, the colours of the Duchy of Brabant’s coat of arms, a gold lion with red claws and tongue on a black shield. Brussels rebels carried the three colours in the 1789 Brabant Revolution and again in the uprising of August 1830 that won independence from the Netherlands; the stripes were first horizontal and were turned vertical on 23 January 1831 to mark the flag apart from the Dutch and to echo the French tricolore. The official proportion is an unusually square 13:15, but almost every flag actually flown, including ours, uses the standard 2:3 shape. The black band goes next to the pole. Our Belgium flag keeps the yellow a warm golden shade rather than lemon, so it reads as Belgian and not German when the two are hung side by side at a tournament.
Red Devils, National Day and Spa
The Belgium flag sells hardest around the national football team: the Red Devils at the World Cup and the Euros bring out flags in pubs and fan parks across Britain, and the World Cup 2026 Belgium team bundle packs a flag, bunting and hand flags together for a supporters’ night. Belgian National Day on 21 July, the anniversary of Leopold I taking the oath in 1831, is marked by the embassy, Belgian clubs in London and Manchester and the Belgian beer bars and frites houses that have spread across every city centre. Cycling fans fly it for the spring classics and the Tour of Flanders, motorsport fans for the Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps in late July, and schools order hand flags for European Day and language projects. Tintin, Magritte and Poirot evenings have all been known to need one too.
Flanders, Wallonia and Liège
Belgium’s regions each fly their own banner. The Flanders Lion flag, a black lion with red claws and tongue on yellow, is the flag of the Flemish community and is out in force on Flemish Day, 11 July, and at the Ronde van Vlaanderen. The Walloon flag shows the bold red cockerel, the coq hardi, on yellow for the French-speaking south and its day on the third Sunday of September. The Liège flag is the red and yellow banner of the city and province, and the Belgium Smiley Face flag is for the fan park.
Sizes, grades and fittings
The Belgium flag is stocked in 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft. Flagtex is the woven-polyester print for a tournament, a party or a bar; DuraFlag is the heavier knitted polyester with reinforced hems for a flag that flies on an outdoor pole through the year. Eyelets are standard on both, with clips or a rope and toggle available on the DuraFlag for a halyard pole. The Flanders Lion and Walloon flags follow the same size and grade options.
Belgium bunting
Belgium bunting repeats the tricolour on every pennant in 3m, 5m, 9m and 20m lengths, in a rectangle cut or a triangle cut, on weatherproof polyester sewn to a strong tape. A 3m length goes over a bar’s beer taps, 9m dresses a pub window or a classroom, and 20m runs the length of a fan zone. Flanders Lion bunting comes in 3m and 9m for a Flemish club night or a cycling cafe.
Hand flags and table flags
Belgium hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for the fan park and the school parade, with a Flanders Lion hand flag alongside. The Belgium table flag with base is the 6x4in desk flag for a beer bar, a chocolate shop counter or a conference table, with Flanders Lion and Walloon table flags for a regional set, and the Belgium satin table flag on a chrome base for a reception desk. France, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Germany each have their own hub under world flags.
Belgian flag FAQs
What do the colours of the Belgian flag mean?
Black, yellow and red are the colours of the arms of the Duchy of Brabant: a gold lion with red claws and tongue on a black shield. They were adopted by the revolutionaries of 1830 as the colours of the new nation.
Why are the stripes on the Belgian flag vertical?
The 1830 flag had horizontal stripes. They were turned vertical in January 1831, partly to distinguish the flag from the Dutch tricolour and partly to echo the French flag, which the new state admired.
Which side of the Belgian flag goes next to the pole?
The black stripe is at the hoist, next to the pole, with yellow in the middle and red flying free. Our flags are printed with the eyelets on the black edge.
What is the Flanders Lion flag?
The black lion with red claws and tongue on a yellow field is the official flag of the Flemish community and region. A version with a wholly black lion is used by the Flemish movement; ours is the official red-clawed design.
When is Belgian National Day?
21 July, the anniversary of King Leopold I swearing the constitutional oath in 1831. In the UK it is marked by Belgian clubs, the embassy and Belgian bars and restaurants.
What size Belgium flag for a pub during the World Cup?
5ft x 3ft is the usual size for a bar wall or a bracket pole; 8ft x 5ft covers a beer-garden fence or a big-screen backdrop, and 3m or 9m of bunting fills the gaps between the other nations.
How quickly can Belgium flags be delivered?
All the flags, bunting and table flags on this page are stocked in and dispatched from our Stoke-on-Trent warehouse; order by 2pm and it ships the same day with free 1–2 day UK delivery.
