The Belarus flag we stock: red, green and the ornament

The flag in this collection is the current state flag of Belarus: a red band over a narrower green band, in a two-to-one ratio, with a vertical strip at the hoist carrying a red geometric ornament on a white ground. The red and green layout goes back to the flag of the Byelorussian SSR adopted in 1951, which carried a gold hammer, sickle and star in the top corner; those were removed in the design approved by referendum on 7 June 1995, and in 2012 the ornament strip was redrawn with the pattern in red on white rather than white on red. The ornament itself is a traditional rushnyk, the embroidered towel woven for weddings and harvest, and the specific pattern is attributed to a 1917 design by the weaver Matrona Markevich from Sianno. Red is usually explained as the banners of the Grunwald victory and the partisan brigades, green as the forests and fields and the colour of renewal. The proportions are 1:2. Our Belarus flag prints the ornament in full detail along the hoist, which is the element most often simplified or dropped on cheaper flags. The white-red-white flag used in 1918 and again from 1991 to 1995 is a different design and is not part of this collection.

3 July, the hockey and the classroom

Independence Day in Belarus is 3 July, the anniversary of the liberation of Minsk in 1944, and the flag is raised that day with a parade in the capital; 9 May, Victory Day, and 15 March, Constitution Day, are the other official flag days. In sport the colours have been carried by the national ice hockey team, which hosted the world championship in Minsk in 2014, by the biathlete Darya Domracheva with her three golds at Sochi, by the rhythmic gymnasts and rowers who have won most of the country’s Olympic medals, and by a long line of tennis players from Max Mirnyi to Victoria Azarenka and Aryna Sabalenka. In Britain the flag is mostly bought for school projects on eastern Europe, for exhibition stands at trade fairs, for collectors of post-Soviet flags and for the table at a conference or a consular event, and this hub keeps to the flag itself and the products made from it.

Choosing a Belarus flag

The Belarus flag is stocked in 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft in two grades. Flagtex is the printed woven polyester, light and good value for a classroom, a display board or a short run outdoors; DuraFlag is the heavier knitted polyester with a double-stitched hem for a pole flown all year. 5ft x 3ft is the garden pole size, 3ft x 2ft fits a wall bracket or a window, 8ft x 5ft dresses a stage or a 20ft mast, and 20x12in sits on a hand pole or a desk stand. All sizes have a sewn header with brass eyelets; the DuraFlag can be ordered with clips or a rope and toggle for a halyard.

Belarus bunting

Belarus bunting is sold in 3m and 9m lengths of rectangular pennants printed with the red, green and ornament design and stitched to a tape. Three metres trims a doorway or a display table; nine metres runs round a hall or a stand. The pennants are weatherproof polyester, lengths join end to end, and plain red and green strings from the bunting range extend a scheme.

Hand flags and table flags

Belarus hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for a match, a parade or a school event. The Belarus table flag is a 6x4in flag on a base for a desk, the 9x6in wooden table flag and the 18x12in large wooden table flag are for a reception or a conference table, and the sleeved satin table flag is the formal option. Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Ukraine and Russia are under world flags.
