The Ikurriña: how the Basque flag is built

The Basque flag, the Ikurriña, is a red field crossed by a green saltire, with a white upright cross laid on top of both. It was designed in 1894 by the brothers Luis and Sabino Arana, at first as a flag for Biscay, and its name comes from the Basque word ikur, meaning a sign or symbol. The red is usually read as the Basque people, the green saltire as the oak of Gernika and the old laws sworn beneath it, and the white cross as the Christian faith. The flag spread across the Basque provinces in the early twentieth century and became the official flag of the Basque Autonomous Community in 1979. On our Basque flag the saltire and cross are placed edge to edge in the traditional proportions.

Festivals, clubs and Basque food in Britain

The Ikurriña is a festival flag above all. It hangs from balconies for the summer fiestas of Bilbao’s Aste Nagusia and San Sebastián’s Semana Grande, flies at rural sports days with stone lifting and wood chopping, and turns up at pelota courts and choir concerts. In Britain it decorates pintxos bars and Basque restaurants, Basque cultural society dinners and the stands when Athletic Club or Real Sociedad play here in Europe. Families descended from the children evacuated from Bilbao to Southampton in 1937 also keep the flag for reunions and anniversaries.

Basque flag sizes, grades and fittings

Basque flags come in 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft from £6.99. A 5ft x 3ft suits a balcony or garden pole; the 8ft x 5ft fills a restaurant wall or a stand. Flagtex is our printed lightweight woven polyester with brass eyelets; DuraFlag is a heavier knitted grade with double-stitched hems, which can be fitted with clips or rope and toggle when the Ikurriña is flying outdoors for months.

Basque bunting

Basque bunting repeats the red, green and white on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths, from £9.98, ready for a fiesta night, a pintxos bar ceiling or a club marquee. The polyester flags shrug off a shower and read well from either side of the cord.

Hand flags and table flags

Basque hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in, from £5.99. For desks and reception counters there is the 6x4in Basque table flag on a base, from £1.98, and the 18x12in large wooden table flag, from £3.98. Other regional and national flags are in our world flags.
