The Bahrain flag: five white points into red
The flag of Bahrain is red with a white band at the hoist, the two divided by a serrated line that forms five white triangles pointing into the red. Red was the traditional colour of flags in the Gulf, and the white band was added after the General Maritime Treaty of 1820 with Britain to mark Bahraini ships as friendly vessels. The number of points varied over the years until 2002, when Bahrain became a kingdom and the count was fixed at five, standing for the five pillars of Islam. The flag is often confused with Qatar’s, but Qatar uses a maroon field, nine points and a longer shape, so the bright red and the five points are the giveaway. Our Bahrain flag is printed in the correct red with five evenly spaced points.
National Day, the Grand Prix and Gulf football
Bahrain National Day is celebrated on 16 and 17 December, the anniversary of Sheikh Isa bin Salman’s accession in 1961, with fireworks over Manama, decorated streets and the red and white on every building. The flag has been on screens around the world since 2004, when the Sakhir circuit staged the first Formula One Grand Prix in the Middle East, and in football Bahrain won the Arabian Gulf Cup for the first time in 2019 and again in January 2025. The links with Britain run deep, from the treaty relationship that ended in 1971 to the Royal Navy’s support facility at Mina Salman opened in 2018, and Bahraini students at British universities, embassy receptions in London and Gulf football screenings all bring out the flag.
Sizes, grades and fittings
Every Bahrain flag size comes in DuraFlag, the knitted heavyweight polyester with double-stitched hems: 20x12in with rope and toggle, and 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft with clips. The lighter Flagtex grade, printed woven polyester with eyelets for indoor and occasional outdoor use, covers the Bahrain flag in 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft. Hang the 5ft x 3ft on a pole or a majlis wall, the 3ft x 2ft in a window or on a student society stand, the 8ft x 5ft for a stage or a large fixed mast and the 20x12in on a car for National Day.
Bahrain bunting
Bahrain bunting is a string of rectangular pennants showing the white band and five red-and-white points, sold in 3m and 9m lengths. A 3m length frames a doorway, a buffet or a school display; the 9m length dresses a hall, a marquee or a Grand Prix party. The Bahraini pennants are printed on both sides of a weatherproof polyester.
Hand flags and table flags
Bahrain hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for National Day parades, football and school events. The Bahrain table flag is a 6x4in flag on a base for an office, a trade stand or a dinner table, and the large wooden Bahrain table flag at 18x12in suits an embassy desk or a boardroom. Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and the United Arab Emirates flags are under world flags.
