The Austrian flag: red, white and red
The Austria flag is three horizontal bands of red, white and red in 2:3 proportion, one of the oldest national colour schemes in Europe. The Babenberg dukes were using the red-white-red shield by 1230, and the legend behind it is that Duke Leopold V came out of the Siege of Acre in 1191 with his white surcoat soaked red except for the band under his sword belt. The colours served the Habsburg lands for centuries, became the flag of the republic in 1918 and were restored in 1945 after the war; the republic’s civil flag is the plain tricolour, while the state flag adds the federal eagle. Our Austria flag keeps the three bands at equal depth with the red a true scarlet, printed through so the stripes read correctly from both sides, and it is cut to the standard 2:3 shape so it hangs square beside its neighbours on a row of poles.
The eagle crest flag
The Austria Crest flag is the state flag, the Bundesdienstflagge, with the black federal eagle in the centre: a single-headed eagle carrying a hammer and a sickle for workers and farmers, a mural crown for the middle class and a broken chain on its legs for the liberation of 1945. It is the flag flown on government buildings and embassies and the one most Austrians abroad choose for a display, since the plain tricolour is easily mistaken for Latvia, Lebanon or Peru from a distance. It comes in the same sizes and grades as the civil flag, with matching crest bunting and crest table flag.
National Day, ski season and Vienna in London
Austrian National Day on 26 October marks the 1955 declaration of permanent neutrality and is kept by the embassy, the Austrian Cultural Forum and the Austrian societies in London, Manchester and Edinburgh with concerts, church services and receptions. The flag then follows the winter: ski-club trips and chalet bars, the Hahnenkamm at Kitzbühel in January and the Vienna Opera Ball and the Austrian balls held in London each winter. Summer brings the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring, the Salzburg Festival, Alpine cycling and the Austrian football team at the Euros and World Cup, when the World Cup 2026 Austria team bundle packs a flag, bunting and hand flags together for a supporters’ night. Schnitzel houses, Viennese coffee houses, Christmas-market glühwein stalls and the schützen and Oktoberfest-style events keep a flag or a run of bunting up for the season.
Sizes, grades and fittings
The Austria flag is stocked in 20x12in for a hand pole or a desk, 3ft x 2ft for a chalet wall or a short pole, 5ft x 3ft for a garden pole, a bar or a float, and 8ft x 5ft for a hall, a sports field or a tall fixed pole. Flagtex is the woven-polyester print for a party, a ski trip or a tournament; DuraFlag is the knitted-polyester outdoor grade with double-stitched hems for a pole outside a restaurant or a club through the year. Both come with eyelets, and the DuraFlag can be ordered with clips or a rope and toggle for a halyard pole.
Austria bunting
Austria bunting carries the red-white-red flag on every pennant in 3m, 5m, 9m and 20m lengths, in a rectangle cut or a triangle cut, on weatherproof polyester sewn to a strong tape. A 3m length frames a coffee-house counter, 9m dresses a chalet bar or a classroom, and 20m crosses a Christmas market or a fan zone. The Austria crest bunting comes in 3m and 9m with the eagle on each piece for an embassy reception or a society dinner.
Hand flags and table flags
Austria hand flags on wooden sticks in 9x6in and 18x12in are the parade, ski-race and fan-park flags, sold singly and in packs. The Austria table flag with base is the 6x4in flag for a restaurant counter, a conference table or a school project, the large wooden table flag at 18x12in suits a reception, and the Austria satin table flag on a chrome base is the one for an office or a consulate desk, with an eagle crest satin version alongside. The Austria Smiley Face flag is for the après-ski. Germany, Switzerland, Hungary and the rest of central Europe have their own hubs under world flags.
Austrian flag FAQs
What is the story behind the Austrian flag?
Legend says Duke Leopold V of Austria fought at the Siege of Acre in 1191 until his white tunic was red with blood except under his belt, giving the red-white-red pattern. The colours are documented on the Babenberg shield from 1230 and have represented Austria ever since.
What is the difference between the Austria flag and the Austria crest flag?
The plain tricolour is the civil flag used by the public. The crest flag adds the federal eagle with its hammer, sickle, mural crown and broken chain and is the state flag used on government buildings; both are correct for general display.
Is the Austrian flag the same as the Latvian or Lebanese flag?
No. Latvia’s flag has a narrow white band on maroon, Lebanon’s has a green cedar in the centre and Peru’s stripes are vertical. The Austria flag has three equal horizontal bands of scarlet, white and scarlet; the crest version removes any doubt.
When is Austrian National Day?
26 October, the anniversary of the 1955 law declaring Austria permanently neutral. It is a public holiday in Austria and is marked by Austrian societies and the embassy in the UK.
What size Austria flag for a chalet bar or a ski-club night?
5ft x 3ft covers a bar wall or a bracket pole, 3ft x 2ft fits a smaller wall or a window, and 3m or 9m of bunting runs along the counter. The 20x12in size suits a table display or a car.
Can I get Austria hand flags for a school or a ski team?
Yes, the 9x6in and 18x12in hand flags are sold in packs for schools, ski clubs and supporters’ groups.
