A flag for a continent with no country

Antarctica has no government and no official flag. Under the Antarctic Treaty, signed in Washington on 1 December 1959 and in force since 1961, the continent is set aside for peace and science, and territorial claims are frozen. The most widely used design, which we stock as the Antarctica flag, was created by the vexillologist Graham Bartram in 1996: a plain blue field with a white map of the continent at the centre. The blue echoes the United Nations flag, and the white shape shows the ice sheet as it appears from above. A newer design, the True South flag, uses dark blue and white and has been carried on a number of recent expeditions.

Expeditions, schools and Antarctica Day

Polar teams, charity trekkers and cruise passengers take the flag south for summit and pole photographs, and research stations celebrate Midwinter Day on 21 June. Antarctica Day on 1 December marks the signing of the treaty and is popular with schools and science centres. The flag is also used for geography lessons, penguin-themed parties and talks about Scott and Shackleton.

Sizes, grades and fittings

The Antarctica flag is offered in 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft from £7.99, in Flagtex or DuraFlag. Expedition teams often pick a 3ft x 2ft as light enough for a rucksack but big enough for a photograph. DuraFlag is the one for wind and spray, a dense knitted polyester with stitched hems, offered with eyelets, clips or rope and toggle; Flagtex is the lighter printed option. The True South flag is listed as a single option at £7.99.

Antarctica bunting

Antarctica bunting strings the blue and white map flag along rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths, a neat backdrop for a classroom or a science fair stand.

Hand flags and table flags

Antarctica hand flags on wooden sticks are £7.99. For a desk there is the 6x4in small table flag, the satin table flag and an 18x12in large wooden table flag. Flags of the treaty nations are in our world flags.

Antarctica flag FAQs

Does Antarctica have an official flag?

No. No country governs Antarctica, so there is no official flag; the blue map design is the best known.

Who designed the Antarctica flag?

The blue flag with the white map was designed by Graham Bartram in 1996.

What is the True South flag?

A more recent Antarctica flag in dark blue and white, which has been flown on several expeditions.

When is Antarctica Day?

1 December, the anniversary of the signing of the Antarctic Treaty in 1959.

Which size is best for an expedition photo?

A 3ft x 2ft packs small and still fills the frame; a 20x12in suits a sledge or rucksack.

Where are Antarctica flags sent from?

Antarctica flags are stocked in and dispatched from our Stoke-on-Trent warehouse; order before 2pm for same-day dispatch and free 1–2 day UK delivery.
