The Angola flag: red, black and the cog and machete

The flag of Angola is divided horizontally into red over black, with a yellow emblem in the centre made up of half a cog wheel, a machete crossing it and a five-pointed star. It was raised on 11 November 1975, the day Angola became independent from Portugal, and is based on the flag of the MPLA, the movement that formed the first government. The red stands for the blood shed under colonial rule and in the fight for independence, the black for the African continent and the yellow for the country’s mineral and natural wealth. The cog represents industrial workers, the machete the peasants and farm labour and the star international solidarity and progress, which is why the emblem is often compared with the hammer and sickle. A new design with a sun was proposed in 2003 but never adopted, so the 1975 flag remains official. Our Angola flag shows the emblem in clear yellow across the line where the red meets the black.

Independence Day, AfroBasket and the Palancas Negras

Independence Day on 11 November is the biggest flag day for Angolans, alongside 4 February, the start of the armed struggle in 1961, and 4 April, Peace Day, which marks the end of the civil war in 2002. Basketball is where Angola has dominated Africa, with eleven AfroBasket titles and a run of Olympic appearances, while the football team, the Palancas Negras or Black Sable Antelopes, reached the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations in early 2024. The UK’s Angolan community, many of them Portuguese speakers who arrived from the 1990s onwards, is centred in London, where Lusophone churches, kizomba and semba nights and community associations bring out the red and black flag on 11 November and for Africa Cup of Nations matches.

Sizes, grades and fittings

Two grades of Angola flag are kept in stock. For the Angola flag, Flagtex, the printed woven polyester that suits indoor use or occasional days outside, comes in 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft with eyelets; DuraFlag, the knitted heavyweight polyester with double-stitched hems for permanent flying, comes in 20x12in with rope and toggle and in 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft with clips. A 5ft x 3ft is the flag for a pole, a church hall or a basketball court; a 3ft x 2ft for a window or a stall; an 8ft x 5ft for a stage or a big mast; and a 20x12in for the car on Independence Day.

Angola bunting

Angola bunting is a string of rectangular pennants showing the red and black halves with the yellow emblem, sold in 3m and 9m lengths. Run 3m along a shop front, a buffet table or a classroom wall, or 9m round a community hall, a marquee or a garden party on 11 November. Each Angolan pennant is printed on both faces and the polyester shrugs off a shower.

Hand flags and table flags

Angola hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for AFCON screenings, school days and Independence Day parades. The Angola table flag is a 6x4in flag on a base for an office, a consulate desk or a family dinner, and the large wooden Angola table flag at 18x12in suits a boardroom or a community centre reception. Mozambique, Portugal, Brazil, Cape Verde and the Congo flags are under world flags.
