The African Union flag and what it stands for
The African Union was launched in Durban in 2002 as the successor to the Organisation of African Unity, which had been founded in Addis Ababa on 25 May 1963. Its present flag was adopted in 2010. The green field stands for the hopes of the continent, and at the centre a map of Africa sits inside a white sun, ringed by gold stars for the member states. Because it represents the whole union rather than one country, the African Union flag is a favourite with groups that bring several African nationalities together, from student societies to church congregations.
Africa Day, conferences and community events
Africa Day on 25 May marks the founding of the OAU and is celebrated by African communities in London, Birmingham, Manchester and beyond with music, food and flags. The AU flag also suits conferences on trade and development, model United Nations days, university African-Caribbean society events and Black History Month displays in October. Many organisers fly it beside the flags of individual countries so that every visitor finds a familiar colour.
Sizes, grades and fittings
The African Union flag is stocked in 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft, starting at £7.99. A 3ft x 2ft is the usual choice for a stage backdrop or an indoor wall, while 5ft x 3ft is standard for a pole. Choose Flagtex, our lighter printed polyester for occasional events, or DuraFlag, a heavier knitted cloth with reinforced stitching for regular outdoor flying; DuraFlag comes with eyelets, clips or rope and toggle.
African Union bunting
African Union bunting carries the green flag on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths, ready to hang along a hall, a marquee or a festival stall.
Hand flags and table flags
AU hand flags come on wooden sticks in 9x6in and 18x12in for parades and welcomes. For meeting rooms there is the 6x4in African Union table flag with a base and an 18x12in large wooden table flag. The flags of individual member states, from Benin to Burundi, are in our world flags range.
