The Samoa flag: red field and the Southern Cross

Samoa’s flag is a red field with a dark blue rectangle in the upper hoist carrying five white stars arranged as the Southern Cross, four large five-pointed stars and one smaller one. A four-star version was introduced in 1948, and the fifth star was added on 24 February 1949; the flag was kept unchanged when the country, then known as Western Samoa, became the first Pacific island nation to gain independence on 1 January 1962. The red is said to stand for courage, the blue for freedom and the white for purity. Western Samoa shortened its name to Samoa in 1997, which is why our product pages still list these items as Samoa (Western). Our Samoa flag places the five stars in their correct pattern on the blue canton.

Independence Day, the Siva Tau and Samoan rugby

Although independence came on 1 January, Samoa celebrates it on 1 June each year with parades, fautasi longboat races and dancing in Apia. In Britain, the flag is everywhere when Manu Samoa play rugby union at Twickenham or Toa Samoa play rugby league; Toa Samoa reached the final of the 2021 Rugby League World Cup, played in England in 2022, and drew huge, flag-waving crowds. Samoan players are found throughout the Premiership and Super League, and the Siva Tau war dance before kick-off is a moment for hand flags. Samoan churches and families in the UK use the flag and bunting for White Sunday and family celebrations.
