The Vanuatu flag: gold Y, boar’s tusk and namele leaves
Vanuatu’s flag was adopted at independence on 30 July 1980. A horizontal gold Y, edged in black, lies on its side with its arms opening towards the hoist, dividing the field into red at the top and green at the bottom, with a black triangle at the hoist. Inside the triangle is a gold curled boar’s tusk, a traditional symbol of prosperity worn as a pendant, encircling two crossed namele fern leaves, a symbol of peace whose 39 fronds stand for the members of the first legislature. The gold Y represents the shape of the island chain and the light of the gospel spreading through it, the red the blood of boars and of men, the green the richness of the islands, and the black the Ni-Vanuatu people. Our Vanuatu flag prints the tusk and leaves crisply inside the triangle.
Independence Day, land diving and Pacific events
Independence Day on 30 July is celebrated with parades and sports across the islands, and the flag is everywhere in Port Vila. Vanuatu is known for the land diving of Pentecost Island, the vine-jumping ritual that inspired bungee jumping, and for Mount Yasur on Tanna, one of the most accessible active volcanoes in the world. In Britain the flag is used by Ni-Vanuatu families and students, Pacific Islander societies and rugby sevens fans, and bought by travellers who have visited the islands.
