The Russian flag: white, blue and red
The Russia flag is a horizontal tricolour of white over blue over red in 2:3 proportion. Peter the Great chose the three colours in the 1690s after studying shipbuilding in the Netherlands, and the arrangement first flew as the ensign of Russian merchant ships in 1705. It became the official national flag of the empire in 1896, disappeared under the red Soviet banner from 1918, and was restored on 22 August 1991, the date now kept as Russian Flag Day. No meaning was ever written into law, but the usual reading is white for frankness and nobility, blue for faithfulness and honesty, and red for courage and love. Our Russia flag holds the three bands at equal depth with the blue a true cobalt rather than the paler Serbian or Slovenian shades, printed right through the cloth.
Crest, Imperial and naval flags
The Russia (Crest) flag adds the state coat of arms, the gold double-headed eagle with St George at its heart, to the centre of the tricolour; it is not an official state flag but it is the one most supporters and collectors ask for. The Russian Imperial flag is the black, yellow and white tricolour that Alexander II made the official flag from 1858 to 1883, seen today at historical re-enactments, Romanov anniversaries and heritage displays. The Russian Navy ensign, a blue St Andrew’s saltire on white introduced under Peter the Great, is the flag for model-ship builders and naval history groups, and the Russia Smiley Face flag is the party one.
When Russian flags are flown in the UK
The dates are Russia Day on 12 June, Flag Day on 22 August, Victory Day on 9 May, Maslenitsa in late February or early March and Orthodox Christmas on 7 January, with Easter following the Julian calendar. Russian-speaking communities in London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Bristol fly the flag at Saturday schools, language-centre open days, parish celebrations and cultural festivals, and Russian restaurants and delis keep a table flag on the counter all year. Schools order hand flags for geography and World War Two projects, universities for international days and language weeks, and theatres and film units use the Imperial and Soviet-era colours as props for period work.
Sizes, grades and fittings
The Russia flag is stocked in 20x12in for a hand pole or desk display, 3ft x 2ft for a short pole or an indoor wall, 5ft x 3ft for a garden flagpole, a classroom or a stage, and 8ft x 5ft for a hall, a sports field or a tall fixed pole. Flagtex is the standard woven-polyester print for indoor use and events; DuraFlag is the heavier knitted-polyester grade with reinforced hems for a flag that stays outside through the year. Every flag comes with brass eyelets as standard, and the DuraFlag can be ordered with clips or a rope and toggle to suit the halyard on your pole.
Russia bunting
Russia bunting repeats the tricolour on each rectangular pennant, sewn to a strong tape, in 3m and 9m lengths; the Russia crest bunting comes in the same two lengths with the eagle on every piece. A 3m run frames a classroom door or a market stall, a 9m run dresses a hall stage or a restaurant window, and two or three lengths tied end to end cover a marquee or a church hall for a parish feast. The polyester is weatherproof, so it comes out again for the next Maslenitsa.
Hand flags and table flags
Russia hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in, with a crest hand flag in the same sizes for parades and school assemblies. The Russia table flag with its base is the 6x4in desk flag for a language school reception, a conference table or a project display, and the crest and Imperial versions sit alongside it. The Russia satin table flag on a chrome base is the smarter choice for an office or an embassy-style reception. Ukraine, Belarus, Georgia, Armenia and the other former Soviet republics each have their own hub under world flags.
Russian flag FAQs
What do the colours of the Russian flag mean?
There is no official meaning. The traditional reading is white for nobility and frankness, blue for faithfulness and honesty, and red for courage, generosity and love; an older version links the three to the Russian, Belarusian and Ukrainian lands.
When was the Russian flag adopted?
Peter the Great introduced the white, blue and red tricolour as a merchant ensign in 1705. It became the national flag in 1896, was replaced by the Soviet red flag after 1918 and was restored on 22 August 1991, now celebrated as Flag Day.
What is the black, yellow and white Russian flag?
That is the Russian Imperial flag, official from 1858 to 1883 under Alexander II. The colours come from the imperial coat of arms, a black eagle on a gold field with the white of St George, and it is flown today by historical and heritage groups.
What is the difference between the Russia flag and the Russia crest flag?
The plain flag is the official tricolour. The crest flag adds the double-headed eagle coat of arms in the centre, which makes it easier to tell apart from similar tricolours at a distance; it is a popular supporters’ and display design rather than a state flag.
What size Russian flag suits a classroom or a school project?
3ft x 2ft fits a classroom wall or a display board, and the 6x4in table flag with base works for a project table. Hand flags in 9x6in are the usual choice for a class of pupils.
Do you sell Russia bunting in longer lengths?
Russia bunting comes in 3m and 9m lengths. For a longer run tie two or more lengths together at the end loops; the join sits behind a pennant and is invisible once it is up.
