The Philippine flag: the sun, the three stars and a flag that turns over in war

The Philippines flag is a blue band over a red band with a white triangle at the hoist, and inside the triangle a golden sun with eight rays and three five-pointed stars. It was designed by Emilio Aguinaldo in exile in Hong Kong in 1898, sewn by Marcela Agoncillo and her daughter, and first unfurled at the proclamation of independence from Spain in Kawit on 12 June 1898. The eight rays stand for the first eight provinces that rose against Spain in 1896, the three stars for Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao, blue for peace and justice, red for patriotism and the white triangle for equality and the Katipunan. It is the only national flag that changes meaning when inverted: flown with red uppermost it signals that the country is at war. Our Philippines flag uses the royal blue fixed by the 1998 flag law rather than the light blue of some older prints.

Independence Day, the Barrio Fiesta and Filipinos in the UK

12 June is Araw ng Kalayaan, Independence Day, and the flag comes out at embassy receptions, church parades and community picnics from London to Aberdeen. The Barrio Fiesta sa London each July is the biggest Filipino gathering in Europe, and Filipino nurses and care workers, the largest overseas-born group in the NHS, fly the flag on wards for Filipino Nurses Day and at hospital cultural fairs. Simbang Gabi, the nine dawn masses before Christmas, and the Sinulog and Flores de Mayo celebrations as kept here bring out bunting and hand flags, and every Manny Pacquiao fight and Gilas Pilipinas basketball game fills a Filipino restaurant with flags. Buwan ng Wika in August sees schools and Filipino Saturday classes ordering hand flags for the children.

Which size Philippines flag?

5ft x 3ft is the size for a garden pole, a restaurant front, a church hall or a fiesta stage; 3ft x 2ft for a bedroom, a ward noticeboard or a stall; 8ft x 5ft for a flagpole, a parade float or a Barrio Fiesta gazebo; 20x12in for a car window or a hand pole. Every size has a sewn header and brass eyelets, and the DuraFlag grade takes clips or a rope and toggle.

Flagtex or DuraFlag?

Flagtex is the printed woven polyester at £6.99 for a 5ft x 3ft, the right grade for 12 June, a fiesta or a fight night. DuraFlag is the 150gsm knitted polyester with double-stitched hems and a reinforced header for a flag that stays up outside a church, a consulate or a restaurant through the year. Both grades are stocked in and dispatched from our Stoke-on-Trent warehouse and leave the same working day on orders before 2pm.

Philippines bunting

Philippines bunting is one of the fuller ranges on the site: rectangle or triangle pennants in 3m, 5m, 9m and 20m lengths on weatherproof polyester sewn to a strong tape. 3m frames a doorway or a lechon table; 9m runs the length of a hall for a fiesta or a christening; 20m crosses a church car park or a street for a Santacruzan procession. The triangle cut gives the banderitas look of a barangay fiesta.

Hand flags and table flags

Philippines hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for the parade, the school and the arena. The Philippines table flag with base is the 6x4in desk flag for a restaurant counter, an embassy desk or a wedding top table, with a wooden table flag and a satin table flag on a chrome base for a reception. Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam are under world flags.

Philippine flag FAQs

What do the sun and stars on the Philippine flag mean?

The eight rays of the sun are the first eight provinces to revolt against Spain in 1896; the three stars are the island groups of Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao.

Why is the Philippines flag flown upside down in war?

By law and custom the blue band is uppermost in peacetime and the red band in wartime. It is the only national flag with an official inverted form, so make sure the blue is at the top when you hang it.

When is Philippine Independence Day?

12 June, the anniversary of the 1898 proclamation at Kawit. Rizal Day on 30 December and National Heroes Day in late August are also flag days, and Flag Day itself is 28 May.

Which blue is correct on the Philippines flag?

Royal blue, fixed by Republic Act 8491 in 1998 after years of lighter and darker shades. Our flag is printed in that royal blue.

What size Philippines flag for a telescopic pole?

5ft x 3ft on a 6m telescopic or garden pole, 8ft x 5ft on a fixed pole of 25ft or more, and 3ft x 2ft on a short or hand pole.

How much bunting for a fiesta hall?

A 9m length covers one wall of a typical church or community hall; two 9m lengths or one 20m length will criss-cross the room. The triangle cut gives the traditional banderitas look.
