The Namibian flag: a sun over the diagonal

The flag of Namibia is divided diagonally by a red band edged in white, running from the lower hoist to the upper fly, with a blue triangle above holding a golden sun of twelve triangular rays and a green triangle below. It was chosen through a public competition, with a committee combining elements of the leading entries, and raised at midnight on 21 March 1990 when Namibia became independent from South African rule. Blue is the sky, the Atlantic and the precious water of a dry country; red is the people and their heroism; green is the vegetation and farming; white is peace and unity; and the sun is life and energy. Our Namibia flag keeps the diagonal at the correct angle and the sun clear of the red band, and the white edging is printed rather than left to the fabric colour, so it stays clean in the wash.

Independence Day, Heroes’ Day and the Welwitschias

Independence Day on 21 March is the main national holiday, with a ceremony at the Independence Stadium in Windhoek; Heroes’ Day on 26 August and Cassinga Day on 4 May are days of remembrance, and Africa Day in May brings the flag out again. Rugby gives it its biggest stage: the Welwitschias have qualified for every Rugby World Cup since 1999, including the 2015 tournament in England, where they played at Exeter, Leicester and the Olympic Stadium, and Namibian supporters fill the stands at every edition. In athletics Frankie Fredericks won four Olympic silver medals in the 1990s, and Christine Mboma took 200m silver in Tokyo. In Britain, Namibians in London, Reading and Bristol hold 21 March braais and church services, and the flag is in demand from safari and overland travellers, school geography projects on the Namib desert and wildlife charities working with desert elephants and cheetahs.

Sizes, grades and fittings

Go for the 5ft x 3ft for a flagpole, a rugby club or a braai; the 3ft x 2ft for a window or a classroom; the 8ft x 5ft for a stage or a tall mast; and the 20x12in for a car or a hand pole. Flagtex is the woven printed polyester for indoor displays and limited time outdoors, and DuraFlag is the knitted heavyweight with double-stitched hems for months on a pole. Every flag has a sewn header with brass eyelets, with clips or rope and toggle as the DuraFlag alternatives.

Namibia bunting

Namibia bunting strings rectangular pennants of the sun-and-diagonal flag on a tape in 3m and 9m lengths. Use 3m across a doorway, a stall or a pub screen for a World Cup match; use 9m along a rugby clubhouse, a marquee or a church hall on 21 March. The pennants are printed on both sides in a polyester that tolerates a shower.

Hand flags and table flags

Namibia hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for rugby tests, Independence Day services and school assemblies. The Namibia table flag is a 6x4in desk flag on a base, and the large wooden table flag at 18x12in suits a travel company desk or a conference table. South Africa, Botswana, Angola, Zambia and Germany flags are under world flags.
