The Liberian flag: eleven stripes and the Lone Star

Liberia’s flag has eleven horizontal stripes, six red and five white, with a blue square in the canton bearing a single white five-pointed star. It was adopted on 26 July 1847, the day the republic declared its independence, and the resemblance to the Stars and Stripes is deliberate: the country was settled from 1822 by freed African Americans under the American Colonization Society, and the flag was drawn up by a committee of seven women led by Susannah Lewis. The eleven stripes stand for the eleven signatories of the Declaration of Independence, the blue square for the African continent and the single star for Liberia as the first independent republic in Africa, which gives the flag its nickname, the Lone Star. Our Liberia flag keeps the stripes evenly spaced with the red at top and bottom and the star centred in the square, so it is not confused with the US flag at a glance.

Independence Day, Flag Day and the Lone Stars

Independence Day on 26 July is the main national holiday, with parades in Monrovia and a national oration, while Flag Day on 24 August is marked by schools with flag-raising and essay contests. Liberians in Britain, concentrated in south London boroughs such as Southwark and Lewisham and in Manchester, hold July 26 picnics, church thanksgivings and dances where the Lone Star is on every table, and the embassy in London hosts an official reception. Football is the national sport and the flag has one great champion: George Weah, the 1995 Ballon d’Or winner who played for Monaco, Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan, Chelsea and Manchester City before serving as president from 2018 to 2024. The Lone Stars reached the Africa Cup of Nations in 1996 and 2002, and the flag also turns up on Liberian-registered merchant ships, one of the biggest ship registries anywhere, so it is seen at UK ports and sold to ship chandlers as well as to the community.

Sizes, grades and fittings

The 5ft x 3ft is the one for a pole, a church hall or a Liberian restaurant; the 3ft x 2ft hangs in a window or over a desk; the 8ft x 5ft is the size for a stage or a large external mast; and the 20x12in suits a car or a hand pole. Flagtex is the printed woven polyester grade for indoor use and short spells outdoors, and DuraFlag is the knitted heavyweight grade with a double-stitched hem for a mast that stays rigged all year. Each has a sewn header with brass eyelets, and the DuraFlag is also offered with clips or a rope and toggle.

Liberia bunting

Liberia bunting is a line of rectangular Lone Star pennants on a tape in 3m and 9m lengths. Three metres frames a doorway, a buffet or a classroom board for Flag Day; nine metres dresses a hall, a marquee or a shop front for the July 26 celebrations. The pennants are double-sided polyester and will take a shower of rain without running.

Hand flags and table flags

Liberia hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for parades, football matches and Independence Day services. The Liberia table flag is a 6x4in flag on a base for an office or an embassy counter, and the large wooden table flag at 18x12in suits a reception desk or a conference table. Sierra Leone, Ghana, Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Guinea flags are listed under world flags.

Liberian flag FAQs

Why does the Liberian flag look like the American flag?

Liberia was founded by freed African Americans in the 1820s and the 1847 flag was modelled on the Stars and Stripes, with eleven stripes for the eleven signatories of the Declaration of Independence and one star for the first independent republic in Africa.

What does the Lone Star on the Liberian flag mean?

The single white star marks Liberia as the first independent republic on the African continent, which the blue square represents.

When is Liberian Independence Day?

26 July, the anniversary of the 1847 declaration. Flag Day follows on 24 August.

How many stripes does the Liberian flag have?

Eleven: six red and five white, with red at the top and bottom edges.

Why is the Liberian flag seen on so many ships?

Liberia runs one of the largest open ship registries in the world, so thousands of merchant vessels fly the Lone Star as their flag of registration.

Which Liberia flag size is best for a church hall or a picnic?

A 5ft x 3ft for the wall or the gazebo, with 3m or 9m bunting along the tables and hand flags for the children.

How quickly will my Liberia flag arrive?

Everything here is stocked in and dispatched from our Stoke-on-Trent warehouse, so an order placed before 2pm leaves that day and is with you in 1–2 working days.
