The Georgian flag: five red crosses on white
This is the flag of Georgia the country, the republic between the Black Sea and the Caucasus mountains, not the American state, whose flag is a different red, white and blue design. The Georgian flag, the Khutkhoshiani or Five Cross flag, is white with a large red St George’s cross reaching the edges and a smaller red Bolnur-Katskhuri cross, a cross with flared arms, in each of the four white quarters. The design is medieval: a similar flag appears on fourteenth-century maps of the Kingdom of Georgia, and the five crosses are usually taken to stand for Christ and the four evangelists, or for the five wounds of Christ. It was adopted as the state flag on 14 January 2004, replacing the dark red, black and white flag that had been used from 1990, which itself revived the flag of the 1918 republic. Our Georgia flag is the 2004 Five Cross design, with the small crosses correctly shaped and centred in their quarters.
Independence Day, Giorgoba and the Lelos
Independence Day on 26 May marks the 1918 declaration and is celebrated with a parade on Rustaveli Avenue in Tbilisi and flags on every balcony; Giorgoba, St George’s Day, is kept on 23 November, and Tbilisoba, the city festival, in October. The Georgian community in Britain, with its church in London and associations in Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh, marks the same dates with suppers, wine evenings and concerts, and Georgian restaurants fly the flag year round. Rugby is the sport that brings the flag out most: the Lelos, Georgia’s national team, play regularly in England, Wales and Scotland, and their supporters travel in numbers; the flag also appears for Georgian footballers in the Premier League, for wrestlers, judoka and weightlifters at the Olympics, and for the Georgian wine fairs that have become a fixture in London.
Sizes and grades in the Georgia range
The 5ft x 3ft is the all-purpose size for a pole, a balcony or a restaurant wall; the 3ft x 2ft for a window, a short pole or a desk wall; and the 8ft x 5ft for a hall, a stage or a large fixed pole. Those three sizes come in Flagtex, the lighter printed polyester for indoor use and short spells outdoors, and the 5ft x 3ft is also offered in DuraFlag, the knitted heavyweight with double-stitched edges for a flag that stays on a pole, with clip or rope-and-toggle fittings. All have a sewn header and brass eyelets as standard.
Georgia bunting
Georgia bunting is a tape of rectangular pennants printed with the Five Cross flag, in 3m and 9m lengths. A 3m length goes over the door or along a supra table; a 9m length dresses a restaurant, a hall or a tent for a 26 May party. The pennants are polyester with the design printed on both sides and can be left outdoors.
Hand flags and table flags
Georgia hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for rugby grounds, parades and concerts. The Georgia table flag is 6x4in on a base for a desk or a restaurant table, and the large wooden table flag at 18x12in suits an embassy reception or a function. Armenia, Azerbaijan, Ukraine and Turkey flags are under world flags.
