The Fiji flag: a light blue ensign with the shield

The flag of Fiji is a light blue field with the Union Jack in the canton and the shield from the national coat of arms in the fly. The pale blue, chosen to set Fiji apart from the darker blue of Australia and New Zealand, is the Pacific Ocean that surrounds the 330 islands. The shield carries a red cross of St George on white, quartered with sugar cane, a coconut palm, a dove of peace holding an olive branch and a bunch of bananas, with a British lion holding a cocoa pod across the top. The flag was first raised on 10 October 1970, the day of independence, and although a government competition in 2015 proposed replacing it, the plan was dropped in 2016 and the 1970 flag stays. Our Fiji flag is printed in the correct light blue with the full-colour shield, which is legible even on the 20x12in size.

Fiji Day, the sevens and the Flying Fijians

Fiji Day on 10 October marks independence and is the centre of a week of celebrations, with Constitution Day on 7 September and Diwali, a public holiday for Fiji’s large Indo-Fijian community, as the other flag occasions. Rugby is the heart of it: the Fiji sevens side won the country’s first Olympic medal, a gold, in Rio in 2016 and repeated it in Tokyo, and the Flying Fijians reached the 2023 World Cup quarter-finals after beating Australia, with the Fijian Drua now in Super Rugby. Fijian flags fill the stands at the London leg of the sevens series, at Twickenham and at Premiership grounds where Fijian wingers and centres have become fixtures. Britain has a large Fijian community: thousands of Fijians have served in the British Army and settled with their families around garrison towns such as Aldershot, Catterick, Colchester and Salisbury Plain, and the flag is out for Fiji Day lovo feasts, church services, kava sessions and rugby tours.

Sizes, grades and fittings

A 5ft x 3ft is the size for a flagpole, a rugby club or a church hall; a 3ft x 2ft for a window, a barrack room or a stall; an 8ft x 5ft for a large fixed mast or a backdrop; and a 20x12in for a car or a hand pole. Flagtex is the printed woven polyester for indoor displays and short-term use outside, DuraFlag the knitted heavyweight with a double-stitched hem for a flag that stays up all season. Both grades have a sewn header with brass eyelets, and the DuraFlag can be supplied with clips or rope and toggle.

Fiji bunting

Fiji bunting is a run of rectangular light blue pennants, each with the Union Jack and shield, in 3m and 9m lengths. A 3m length suits a doorway, a lovo table or a classroom; the 9m length runs along a clubhouse, a marquee or a church hall for Fiji Day. The polyester pennants are printed on both sides and can stay out in the weather.

Hand flags and table flags

Fiji hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for sevens tournaments, Fiji Day parades and school assemblies. The Fiji table flag is a 6x4in flag on a base for an office, a travel agent or a dinner table, and the large wooden table flag at 18x12in suits a high commission desk or a reception. Samoa, Tonga, New Zealand, Australia and Papua New Guinea flags are under world flags.

Fiji flag FAQs

What is on the shield of the Fiji flag?

A St George’s cross dividing four quarters showing sugar cane, a coconut palm, a dove with an olive branch and bananas, with a lion holding a cocoa pod across the top. The shield comes from the national coat of arms.

Why is the Fiji flag light blue?

The light blue represents the Pacific Ocean and distinguishes Fiji from the dark blue ensigns of Australia and New Zealand.

Did Fiji change its flag?

No. A competition to replace it was launched in 2015 but abandoned in 2016, so the flag adopted at independence in 1970 remains in use.

When is Fiji Day?

10 October, the anniversary of independence in 1970, celebrated with a week of events in Fiji and lovo feasts and church services in the UK.

Which size Fiji flag for a rugby match?

A 5ft x 3ft to hold up in the stand or wear as a cape, with 9x6in or 18x12in hand flags for the group.

Does the Fiji flag still have the Union Jack?

Yes. The Union Jack sits in the canton, reflecting the country’s history as a British colony from 1874 to 1970.
